CHIANG MAI, Nov 5 -- Thailand's northern city of Chiang Mai is seeing a lively and active Loy Krathong atmosphere, while local police have beefed up safety measures against overlarge fireworks and floating lanterns during the Yee Pen festival, which kicks off today.

Maejo University here has set up the Best Floating Lantern Contest ahead of Loy Kratong day tomorrow, to celebrate ancient Lanna traditions.

More than 40 floating lanterns have been entered in the contest, with most being elaborately decorated, while some are even taller than a 3-storey building.

In Doi Saket district, local residents and tourists have crowded the Krathong Float Parade Procession, which is over one kilometre long. Colour floats in the procession represent individual villages or a community's local culture and traditions.

In the meantime, around 1,200 Chiang Mai Provincial Police officers were assigned to oversee safety for tourists all around the Ping River, ahead of the Yee Peng festival, before it begins this evening.

Mobile police units were also dispatched to prevent the use of large fireworks and stop shops from illegally selling them.

The police confiscated around 20,000 firecrackers yesterday and have issued a decree that floating lanterns could only be lighted and set afloat after 9pm. (MCOT online news)
