PM: Govt committed to anti-human trafficking MoU signed with Cambodia

BANGKOK, 8 November 2014 (NNT) – Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has affirmed the government’s determination to push forward the memorandums of understanding (MoUs) recently signed with Cambodia, particularly the one seeking to eradicate human trafficking.

Speaking of his official visit to Cambodia during October 30-31, Gen Prayut stated in his weekly televised address that the prime objective of the visit was to strengthen ties with the neighboring country and regain confidence. He said one of the great achievements was the signing of an MoU on bilateral cooperation to eliminate human trafficking and assist the victims.

The premier remarked that the government recognized the growing threats of human trafficking on the national, regional and global levels and had been placing importance on finding solutions. The newly-signed MoU was, therefore, adjusted from the old one in order to be in line with the current situation and to tackle the problem more effectively.

Another method used by the government to deter human trafficking activities is the registration of migrant workers in Thailand. The Prime Minister revealed that more than one million foreign nationals, the majority of whom were Cambodian, had registered for work permits, insisting that the process was being expedited for them.

According to Gen Prayut, the other two MoUs signed during the visit will also bring Thailand and Cambodia to a new level of cooperation. One of them concerns the promotion of tourism in the form of joint packages while the other focuses on the enhancement of railway connectivity between the two neighbors.

Strange that most humans trafficked into Thailand are Burmese, Laos or Vietnamese (depending on the industry) -- so they sign an MoA with Cambodia.

Why don't they publish this MOU so everyone can see it? Instead of just blustering and puffing about it.

Or better yet: Why don't they make actual arrests and do something to stop the trafficking. Somehow they think that the people in western nations are like those in southeast Asia where the promise is the payoff and no follow through is necessary. wai2.gif

Thailand to Cambodia - " We understand that you are not involved in human trafficking. "

Cambodia to Thailand - " We understand you are not involved too. "

All together - " We all understand each other so

Business As Usual ! "

If only these countries could get real about these problems then, maybe, then the relevant U.N. organisation will recognise them?

I think this can be likened to "tidying" up around the edges, cleaning up the rubbish WITHOUT dealing with those who cause the rubbish in the first instance! But sure looks good in the news media. Same same thinking applies to corruption I would suspect. coffee1.gif

MoU's are worth about what the paper they are printed on is worth. If the intent is to eli9minate human trafficing in the fishing industry, the utilization of females in the sex business, etc, those people who own the boats, bars, sweat shops, etc must be held accountable to the full extent of the law.

When the penlity for selling green durians is jail time while a laughable amount of fine is the standard/accepted practice for some low ranking somchi who is titled as manager/captian of the offending establishment/boat/factory, etc a MoU is more meaningless.

The world is watching, the clock is ticking down and the Thai's seem content to watch the fiddler play his music.
