Ebola and poor global economy cause car production to drop

BANGKOK: -- Global economic slowdown and Ebola have slashed automobile production forecast for this year to no more than two million units compared to earlier production forecast of 2.2 million units, according to Mr Surapong Paisitpatthanapong, spokesman of the automobile sector of the Federation of Thai Industries.

He said that the dampened global economic situation has reduced car export to Thailand’s main export markets namely Australia, Asean and the Middle East with the exception of European market where car exports have increased 14 percent.

MrSurapong the automobile sector would wait for the sale performance of the last two months of the year whether it would pick up or not and if not the production target might have to be revised down further.

Production of all types of cars for the month of October amounted to 159,000 units down by 2.76 percent compared to the figures in September. For the first 10 months of this year, car production totaled 1.56 million units down by 25.86 percent compared to the same period last year.

Domestic car sale for October totaled 70,700 units, representing a drop of 20.5 percent compared to the same period last year. Car sale for the first 10 months amounted to 719,000 units down 36 percent compared to the same period last year.

New car sales are actually down in Australia so that is why they are exporting less there. Ebola is not a problem in Australia and is not effecting car sales. People are tightening thier belts not dying from ebola.

Lucky Thailand has the cure for Ebola, so they could sell cars in a package with the Ebola medicine, problem solved!

What a load of Ebolaks!!!!

Lucky Thailand has the cure for Ebola, so they could sell cars in a package with the Ebola medicine, problem solved!

Yes, you buy a car and there's free medicine in the rubber-glove compartment.

The main cause seems to be a collapse in domestic sales so how this is caused by ebola and global economic problems is a bit of a mystery - did this guy not notice a few things going on in Thailand over the last year?

Because there was a model car about to be named 'Ebola'?

Must be a similar fate to companies named Isis.

And think, this guy get paid to make statements like this

Ebola? Wouldn't cancer or heart disease been a better excuse....or are they being saved for the next excuse?

I wonder sometimes how guys like this are able to get any jobs.

Yeah I had my name down for The Toyota Ebola, had all the trimmings face mask,, rubber gloves and water a jet spray for when you get out

<deleted> is wrong with these clowns hiring a spokesman who comes up with such BS?

If Mr. Surapong would "work" for the government we would probably read that global warming causes the mess in the deep south and the losses of Thai Airways.

Are they really unable to find to find people fit for the job in this country or is patronage already the only criteria of qualification?

Thais blame it on Ebola and global economy. No Thais at fault. No Thais responsible. The hubris of these Thais is astonishing and the Thai press just keeps on keeping on. Never a question asked, never a challenge to some pompous bureaucrat making pontifications like this.

And the NIssan felLatio, while you're at it?

What the hell does Ebola has to do with car sales. They are using any excuse possible to justify why the Thai economy is failing under the Junta. Why not just blame it on the tourist not spending enough money here.

Tourists not spending money is affecting car sales?

The junta's power seizure would have nothing whatsoever to do with how many cars are purchased overseas.
