Would like to know what the process is to obtain a visa for my friend to travel from Thailand to Oman, what I need to do, where to go, cost etc.

My wife and I have recently returned from Oman but we were sponsored by my employer. Oman is still a very conservative country. Am I right in assuming that your friend is Thai and female? I have known of people bringing relatives over for visits but are you talking long term? If I remember rightly, she will have to be sponsored by either yourself or your company (maybe your HR department will help you) The fact that she is Thai and unmarried may count against you. The Arabs are still under the impression that Thai girls only want to come to the Gulf for one reason!

If you are granted a visa, the Omanis have a very complicated system. The visa is not stamped into the passport here in BKK. Instead you are given a slip of paper with a visa number and this has to be either faxed to you in Oman or scanned and e-mailed. Once you have received this confirmation then that has to be taken, by hand, to Seeb Airport, Muscat and lodged there. If you are applying on her behalf, then you would make your application at the local police station.

If you are not in Muscat, then see a travel agent and get him to send it by taxi for you and then get a receipt from the travel agent ( keep a copy of it in case of loss). The taxi driver will come back with a receipt from Seeb.

When your friend arrives at Seeb, she will then go to the visa pick-up point, collect the visa and hand that and her passport to passport control. Then pick up her baggage and clear customs.

My company done all the paperwork for me apart from getting the visa to Seeb - it cost me about 7 Rial for one of the local taxis to get the visa to the airport

My wife has just suggested that if she is in employment here in Thailand, it would be advisable to get a letter from her employer to state that she is working there and has been granted leave from (date) to (date)

Traditionally in the middle east, hotels tend to be able to be the sponsor for visa applications. Any 5 star chain should be able to organise the visa on arrival for you.

There was talk a couple of years ago that Dubai (not the UAE!) and Oman would share a common visa, where a dubai issued visa would be good for travelling to Oman, so long as you had first entered Dubai. However, I am unsure if this has been shelved or not.

Whatever the case, I highly recommend Oman as a country. Stunning, peaceful and a great place for a holiday.

I was right, Thai nationals, arriving from the UAE, with a Dubai issued visa, can get a visa on arrival.

Passport (valid for at least 3 months) required.

Visa required.

The following visas can be obtained on arrival:

1. Single entry "Visit Visa" for a max. stay of one month.

(Extension of one month possible). Fee: OMR 6.- per person;

2. Multiple entry visa, possible validity up to a max. of

one year (no extensions possible) for a max. stay of 3 weeks

with a minimum of 3 weeks between visits. Fee: OMR 10.- per

person. Fee: OMR 10.- per person.

Exempt from fees are children up to/incl. 17 years.

Penalties in the case of overstay: OMR 10.- per day.

However, visa not required:

provided arriving from Dubai and holding visa or entry stamp

for Dubai.

Visitor must hold:

- onward/return ticket; and

- all documents required for next destination.

NOTES:

*21If arriving directly from the Emirate of Dubai and

holding a visa or bearing an entrance stamp for the

Emirate of Dubai, a seperate visa for Oman is not

required.

Visitors entering under this scheme must complete a

"Joint Facility Form" on arrival and may remain in Oman

for the period granted by the authorities in Dubai or 3

weeks in the case of nationals not requiring a visa for

Dubai. Penalty in the case of overstay: OMR 10.- per day.

NOTE: this does not apply to any other emirate of the

U.A.E..

Visas not needed, if you arrive from dubai with a dubai visa in passport.
