Just started Allopurinol, now have bad gout attack.

After my checkup for liver function the doctor said it was OK to start a trial of Allopurinol for two weeks, then have another blood test. However, after taking 2X100mg per day for a week, I suddenly get another bad attack in my knee, the same place I was getting it before. Is this normal?

Doubt that it is normal but suspect it is possible as they will check uric acid levels and make adjustments as to the amount of medication. But did you eat something known to be bad prior to this attack? Such as animal organ (liver) or such?

In my case main factor seems to have been family history and have not had any attacks in last 25 years (since starting medication) and occasionally do have some foods that are not considered a good choice.

No, never eat offal and don't drink or smoke, only eat minimum amount of meat, but plenty of fruit and vegetables.

That rxlist info also suggests a possible reduction in side effects by initiating the treatment gradually. Your Dr might advise a lower dose and slowly increase it.

Don't think Allopurinol comes any smaller than 100mg.

Many years ago, my doctor told me that taking allo will trigger an attack of gout, but then things should settle down and the drug will perform as it is meant to do. This indeed what happened.

I never even got the first attack no gout for months but my liver readings are above normal now 48 and 65 instead of 40 or under Edited December 1, 2014 by i claudius

It seems like Allopurinol is the way to go. I'm having a blood test tomorrow to determine if my uric acid levels have decreased in the two weeks I've been taking it.
