Cold attracts more tourists to the North; soldiers dispatched to help cold snap victims

CHIANG MAI, 28 Nov 2014 (NNT) - More visitors flocked to Chiang Mai’s famous Doi Inthanont, while cold snap in Nan Province prompted the military to send aid to the affected locals.

A frozen ground phenomena can be spotted around the vicinity of Doi Inthanont in Chiang Mai, as the temperature in the area has dropped to 2 degrees Celsius. The icy weather is much welcomed by the tourists evidenced by their sheer number visiting the area recently.

Provincial officials expect the number of tourist during the New Year holiday would be in the range of 20,000 to 30,000. Meanwhile in Buriram, both local and foreign visitors have paid a visit to the inactive volcano ‘Kradong’. The provincial tourism office estimated that the venue would welcome no less than 300,000 travelers this year, adding that the majority of tourists are new face family groups from Europe, and Asia.

On the other hand, this year’s cold disaster is considered more devastating than the previous years. Officials in Nan province indicated that the harsh weather brings health risks, especially for those who are less-fortunate. However, initial assistance has been launched by the provincial military units which distributed blankets and warm clothes to the affected locals in Tha Wangpha District.

Mobile medical units are sent from Suriyapong Military Camp Hospital to provide checkups and treatment. The commander of the Nan Military District said the service was also intended as a tribute to His Majesty the King on his 87th birthday anniversary.

I envy you people living in Chiang Mai.

I'm still sweating my guts here in Khon Kaen.

34 degrees Celsius yesterday during the day, 24 after 12 in the morning.

Can you please, blow some of this cold weather towards us?

You are welcome to Chiang Mai’s cold air but I am greedily holding on to our Chiang Rai cold stuff. The early morning fog is amazing and it was downright chilly this morning and getting cooler everyday. It makes riding the mt. bike a lot more pleasant. I am still waiting for a chance to breakout the long sleeves like last year, however.
