Impressive beetle - English name?

Featured Replies

Here's an impressive-looking beetle that lives in my garden. It hisses when picked up, (although I'm sure it is harmless to humans).

It is about 6cm in length and sitting on my wooden hammock

Rhinoceros beetle.

Wiki tells me that it is a Rhinoceros beetle:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xylotrupes_gideon

and it hisses...

and is used as a fighting beetle i n Thailand, meaning it fights other beetles :)

So all I need to do is to find a second Rhino beetle and the fight is ON!

There right into them in Isan, they get them to fight and throw a few baht on it...looser goes into the wok!

In Japan, these are called "Kabuto Mushi" and samurai warriors modeled their helmets on the appearance of the insect's head.

Thanks!

For me, the most 'impressive' thing is that I actually took an 'impressive' photo. I'm not a photographer and I used my simple Kodak V140 camera, (a 2-lens camera used normally to take interior real-estate photos).

I found another of his mates upsidedown on the road this morning. It seems that this species has a serious genetic flaw ==> unable to right themselves when upsidedown.....

True, righting themselves is a big problem when they don't have anything to grab onto (as they normally would in the jungle)
