Chiang Mai officials survey fertilizer prices

CHIANG MAI, 5 Dec 2014, (NNT) - The Commerce Office in Chiang Mai yesterday visited agricultural chemical vendors in the province, inspecting the market prices of fertilizer and pesticide.

Chief of Chiang Mai Commerce Office Piroj Kullawanitch, in his capacity as the chairman of the provincial office on goods prices and services, led a team of officials to inspect the prices of fertilizer sold in their stores and to give advice to local chemical and fertilizer traders regarding the Government’s policies in helping rice farmers.

The inspections in Sansai, Doi Saket, and Mae Rim Districts revealed that the majority of the vendors were in compliance with the Government’s demand that they visibly display the price tags.

The Government earlier came up with various assistance measures aimed at heling rice farmers, including the 1000 baht per rai assistance funds with the maximum of 15,000 baht per farmer, the project to temporarily hire farmers to work at their respective local irrigation offices, and a campaign asking vendors to offer fertilizers and pesticide at lower prices than those suggested on the labels.

as most fertilizer and pesticide is imported in bulk , packaged for retail here the price marked has little to do with cost to those purchasing, except on the day they plunk down the money.

One thing I have found is that price label on top of label is common here and the more labels the stronger the stickem used, so no chance of a peek at previous price. Even manufactors suggested price are covered over with label whose stickem goes down to the container or if paper, rips the paper to leave a blank hole to ponder. The inspector/enforcers are several steps behind the real market place antics of these merchants.
