webfact
Singer Joe Cocker dies at age 70COLORADO: -- British vocalist Joe Cocker, whose blues-drenched, unfettered performances made him one of the most distinctive rock singers of the late '60s and early '70s, died Dec. 22 in Colorado. He was 70, and had been battling lung cancer. The Sheffield-born performer blasted onto the international music scene in 1968 with a storming interpretation of the Beatles' "With a Little Help From My Friends." His spasmodic, high-voltage stage style - memorably caricatured by John Belushi on "Saturday Night Live" - instantly turned him into a top concert attraction.Full story: http://my.chicagotribune.com/#section/-1/article/p2p-82371027/-- Chicago Tribune 2014-12-23

Popular Post Roadman
RIP Joe. Another great musician who lead me astray (with utter enjoyment) as an impressionable teen. The 1969 Joe Cocker album was one of the first LP's I owned and certainly the first worn out.

uptheos
I have been a fan of Joe ever since the 60's, one of the greatest rock - blues singers to come from the UK. A great talent indeed and I will miss him.

nisakiman
That's sad news. Joe Cocker was one of the greatest singers of his era, and one of the very few performers who could do covers of great songs in their own right and actually improve on them. How many people were able to cover Beatles numbers and do them better than the Beatles? Apart from Joe, I would put the number at zero. As someone already said, thank heavens his music has been recorded for posterity. He was unique.
Popular Post Old Croc
I had never heard of him until I wandered into a small theatre In Perth to kill some time about 1970. The film was "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" and was about a rock tour of America by a young Joe. I walked out of there a fan for life, and I haven't been without his music to this day. RIP to the man with the greatest rock voice of all time.
Popular Post ThePlant
Sad news, made worse by the fact that the current #1 in the UK is some limp dross by some talentless no-mark from the X Factor. Are we really the nation who has led the world in popular music for so long? Is the UK public and media now so inexorably musically bereft that we have to see bilge like this top our charts now? Is this crap and 1D all we have to offer the World now? Sorry World. As a Brit proud of our popular music heritage, I'm cringing today.....whither the next Joe Cocker or the like?

Popular Post WitawatWatawit
I still remember my dad's reaction to seeing Joe Cocker on our black and white TV for the first time. At the time us young teens were in thrall at the idea of someone of his ilk breaking the set, puritanic mould that infested NZ after WWII, as much as we were stunned by a performer who gutsed it, as we put it. So dad's "What kind of creature is that?" comment helped seal Joe's place in our rebellious hearts. And he remained there, and did not fade like others. RIP you awesome "creature".

Popular Post earthpig
Joplin and Cocker, the high voltage acts of Rock, born countries and died years and ages apart, but one in fire and lives lived pedal to the metal, unique but, musically speaking, for each other. Lots of real talent in the last half century of rock, blues and jazz, but in the psychedelic rock of Joplin and bluesy rock of Cocker, we were treated to songs of sheer ecstasy. No others popular vocalists I at least can think of in our era came this close to that particular summit. God only knows how Cocker, with all that volcanic energy, lasted on this earth as long as he did. (Perhaps he might have answered: with a little help from my friends?) A genius and a survivor: a very unique chap from every point of view. There passed an extraordinary man. RIP Joe. And thanks.

MisterStretch
I spent 20 years as a radio deejay before going overseas, and saw dozens and dozens of acts. Joe Cocker was one of the best, what energy, what showmanship. A great legacy of music in his catalogue. RIP
