webfact Posted January 7, 2015 Share Posted January 7, 2015 McDonald's Japan Probing Nuggets From Cargill in Thailand By Kiyotaka Matsuda TOKYO: -- McDonalds Corp.s Japan business and Cargill Inc. are investigating complaints objects were found in chicken nuggets made by a Cargill unit in Thailand, the restaurant chains second food-safety crisis in six months. The affected nuggets, supplied by Cargill Meats Thailand, were sold at two outlets in Japan, including one in Tokyo, spokesman Takashi Hasegawa said by telephone today. McDonalds Japan is due to hold a briefing today on the probe at 3:30 p.m. local time. We have already begun an investigation into this matter, Bruce Blakeman, Singapore-based vice president of corporate affairs for Cargill Asia Pacific, said in an e-mailed statement. Cargill, based in Minneapolis, will work closely with McDonalds as its investigation progresses, he said. McDonalds Japan had switched sources of chicken nuggets to three Thailand factories, including two of Cargills, after a food supplier scandal in China hit McDonalds restaurants in both countries last July, Hasegawa said. In the US they were using meat not allowed for human consumption after treating it with amonia, apparent;y this was only happening in the US as food regulations elsewhere meant they could not do it in places like the UK, South America countries and Australia.
