Those eggs look terrible and the beans look like AYA brand which any self respecting englishman would know they are too sweet and in the absence of real Heinz Baked beans the best substitute would be the BROOKS brand.

Using either would put the cost of the meal into the prohibitive range unless you had a really small portion and cut back on the quality of the sausages. I'm not a big lover of beans, but I like Ayam as good as any other non-Heinz brand. I've found that the lower salt ones taste better (when I put enough salt on them to make up for them not having any). Mr K, who doesn't even like salt to be in the kitchen concurs with me on this.

Anyway, as long as there is brown sauce it's immaterial; enough HP and they all taste the same.

Well, wait: they're a restaurant. Restaurants make food. How hard is it to make baked beans?

Not very.

Small navy beans are exceptionally cheap (30 baht for 500 gram dried when bought retail, which turns into well over a kilo cooked), then all you need to do is shove it in an oven with spices and sauces to your liking.

Even the relatively expensive HP sauce is something easily made when used as an ingredient for cooking.. Just mix dark vinegar, ketchup, palm or cane sugar, tamarind, pepper, etc. All of which cost round about nothing.

The whole reason why baked beans exist at all because they're cheap. So when in Asia, anything that would require spending money in importend Heinz/HP means you're doing it wrong.

(And it'll taste much better, but that's almost a side-effect. wink.png )

Where are you buying your beans. 30THB is a great price. Place I shop is 2x to 3x more.

just curious and relevant to this post, how do i add the icons as i want to add thevoff topic one as im in a mischevious mood but cant see the option on my ipad.

i also see the irony in asking on this thread and fully expect to be flamed with off topic before anyone points that out, but i thought it wasnt worth creating a whole new thread.

back on topic, any chance we could see a menu online? im drooling already ahead of my visit in three weeks time!

Doi Kham / Royal Project. Especially the wholesale place on the way to Doi Kham temple, although I don't think there is a price difference for dried goods like these beans compared to their other locations.

So do i.

Coq au vin there yesterday lunch. very tasty, good fresh veg and garlic mash. Portion a little large for me but no complaints and it all went.

Not sure the photo does it justice really but here you go: Hmm. Looks like the picture was too big. FF issue.

Yep, with hindsight the photo was a bad idea! Never going to be an award winner in poor light with a camera phone. But I thought it would give some idea of the portion size and plated up accompaniments .

And it was actually quite pink from the reduced red wine but probably looks more pink in my poor photo. It did look better in the flesh so to speak!

Another recommendation. The big English style breakfast was excellent. I had a breakfast at Butter and Better and for an English style breakfast soi 1 Bar bakery wins by a country mile. Beans real home made sausage grilled tomato as standard.

Great value and a genuinely nice guy. my only small criticism is that he seems over worked and could do with more help as there is only two of them doing everything. However well worth the wait!

Having previously posted how good the food is here on my one and only visit, I feel I have to say that I won't be returning and this has nothing to do with the food, it's the opening hours. Last week I ventured there with my wife just before 10am only to find it closed. The opening times state 9am on the day we went. This is now the third time I have tried to take my wife (as she didn't go with me before) and the third time it's been closed when it should be open.

It's a great shame because the food is good but you can't run a business when you have clearly defined opening times and then not abide from them as you disappoint customers like me who have driven some way to eat there, only for it to be closed. I am sure I am. To the only customer who feels this way.

I recommned the owner changes his opening time sign to represent his true opening times otherwise you will lose more customers.

MODS,I hope this posting isn't deleted as being defamatory as in no way is it wrt the food, merely the opening times and a recommendation to the owner to open as per the opening time signs if he doesn't want to lose any more customers. Equally if there is an emergency or you are on holiday then put that on the door so people know, that way you will keep your customers happy.

I have now changed to another restaurant recommended on here for my English breakfast, shame as this one is good but been disappointed by opening times on too many occasions now which is a real shame.

I'm glad we Americans can make something so good you call it your own....."Heinz" it's more American than hot dogs and apple pie.

And Kraft Heinz pinched the Aussie's very own Vegemite which is sacrilege and to make it a double sacrilege they put a halal approved logo on the label. Is nothing sacred?

Same experience as myself. Tried to go there a couple of times but it was shut. Won't bother going again.

A lot of businesses have been closed this week as its a time when families get to together, so I suggest a drive by after the weekend and see if there is any life.

I was there a couple of week ago but to be honest wild horses wouldn't drive me back. Sorry but they don't get a second chance to make a good first impression.

but it takes a lot to please me!

Just looked on TripAdvisor, it says he's moved to a different location, anyone been yet?

Actually the owner says hes moved to Charoen Prathed Rd.

The gentleman at Soi 1 restaurant, bakery and bar has started making thick hamburgers with premium beef on - really good - home made buns and with good cheese, if you so desire. They are some of the best burgers in town right now.

It is very close to The Cathouse on the Soi beside the new branch of Salad Concept near the moat.

It is a small place and very popular, so if he runs out of hamburger, pretty much everything he makes is really good. The roast pork and roast chicken dinners are great too.

Welcome back, UG! Haven't heard from you in a while! But, to ask, what's available to eat at The Cat House across the soi? Hamburgers and roast dinners no good?

Thats poor, if a business is taking a holiday or not opening there should be a clear sign outside the premises advising of the circumstances, then customers would understand instead of getting annoyed by having wasted time on another fruitless trip.

As you say wild horses wouldn't drive you back and for me now its 3 Strikes and I am outta there, no return for me.

I've ordered from here using Meals on Wheels (despite their delivery charge being twice as much as Food Panda). Very impressed and would like to visit the restaurant, but it's a hike for me that part of town, especially in the off chance it might not be open as has been discussed.

If you're going to live here you need to get used to that feature, it's part of the landscape.

You mean the closing down feature i.e. out of business or the random opening hours or no signs advising they are closed for a week due to something or other?

Exactly, a shame as they have lost customers due to their lack of opening times. As I said the food is or was very good (not sure if its closed down permanently now) but hours of opening are chaotic at best.
