BANGKOK, Jan 16 - Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra today urged teachers to help provide knowledge and simultaneously shield youths at the time when capitalism and materialism from Western countries dominates the mind of young students in Thailand.

He said current rapid changes in society resulted from the new generation which attached more importance to materialism and teachers should teach their pupils not to become the prey of societal dangers which comes along with capitalism.

Mr Sukhumbhand told teachers and administrators of schools under BMA supervision on the occasion of the annual National Teachers’ Day that City Hall would financially support teachers as well as promoting outstanding teachers, aimed at boosting their morale.

More than 3,000 teachers attended the event held at the Thailand-Japan Bangkok Youth Centre in Din Daeng.

Souvenirs, pins and certificates were also presented by Governor Sukhumbhand to this year’s 28 outstanding teachers from city schools. (MCOT online news)

Yeah, forget those nasty western ideas, like freedom of expression, looking outside the box, and mental exploration. Just continue with the "Thainess" we elites know is best for you. Be subservient, never question anything, always do as your told.

Is this your personal experience?

Really feel sorry for you......but don't worry, Thailand is in good hands now......things are changing rapidly.......just trust the General.

Oh, really? What's he done so far?

Banned some beach chairs and umbrellas is all I can see.

Fighting corruption? One case against and opposition opponent, but what about the blatant corruption in the military? Any chance of that being even thought of? Nah, I didn't think so.

Reforming the Police? Sure, move the oppositions cronies out and replace them with your own.

Real education reform? Here's 12 "core values" for you to memorize and repeat dutifully every morning.

I could go on and on, but anyone with a brain can make up their own list.

Sorry, Costas, I like you, but you're living in a fantasy world. This man hasn't done jack <deleted> in regards to any REAL reform since he took power at the point of a gun.

Another kowtowing day for the kids..

And most of their teachers !!!

The teachers all get a chance to pat each other on the back for doing such a great job, while the kids miss yet another day of school.

Materialism will march quite happily into any society where there is a moral vacuum. The west gets the blame once again.

Congratulations to the 28 outstanding teachers.

Would be fair to read that some foreign teachers

had been awarded as well.

"...at the time when capitalism and materialism from Western Asian countries like China, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan dominates the mind of young students in Thailand."

There, that sounds more balanced. Thai kids look east from here.

“materialism from Western countries dominates the mind of young students in Thailand.”

This is pure ignorance and anti-West propaganda. Ipsos Survey 12-17-2013 results from 20 countries:

- China is the most materialistic country in the world with 71% of Chinese saying they gauge their success by the things they own.

- Chinese are the most pressured people in the world with 68% to be successful and make money.

Obviously missing are the wealthy Middle East oil countries which surely would rank higher than Western countries.

The most capitalistic countries in the world – according to Money Smarts (11-16-2012):

Germany, USA, China, and India

The most capitalistic countries in the world - according to the 2014 Economic Freedom of the World annual survey by the Fraser Institute in terms of economic freedom:

Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Switzerland, New Zealand, and Canada

Thailand is ranked 72nd. Hardly the country to decide who is the most capitalistic country in the world.
