Marriage extension visa

Featured Replies

I was wondering if the immigration people come out to the house every year when renewing a marriage extention visa?

Thanks

They only do a home visit for the first extension.

never had an official immigration visit in 5years but have had a couple of visits from local police asking about my visa status just showed my passport and visa/extention detail and off they went

Immigration Police, who usually have their own office away from the general office places we visit will normally visit only after the first application.

One thing which is not commonly known it seems is that your wife must report to the Immigration Police office to declare that she has a Farang living in her household. This is supposed to be done each time the home address is changed. There are quite substantial fines for not doing so.

The fine is maximum 2,000 baht.

Different offices will and often have there own procedures, I have known where other visits can be made NOT just on first visit, but at subsequent applications.

Like many things in Thailand there is no real consistency and situations vary from office to office.

This is interesting Trainman. A couple of weeks ago my wife had cause to go to immigration in Chiang Mai to assist a neighbour, she had to sign her name at which an immigration official asked her if she was born with that name or married to a falang. She said married to a falang at which the official asked her if she had reported me living in her house every six weeks, she replied no, she had not done it in over ten years, he told her she could be fined 20,000 baht and then proceeded to fill out the necessary forms. He told her that her and I must visit him at immigration the next day with my passport, next day we go there and an official looks at my passport and tells me my visa [non 0 multi ] has expired and I must leave the country within seven days or go to Mae Sai and get another 15 days, as it happens my visa ran out on Jan' 27 and on that day I went to Mai Sai and got stamped in for another ninety days, just like I have done for the past 17 years, he was insistent I do as he says in a very calm voice and I was equally insistent that I still had 89 days left as per the stamp in my passport, however my voice was not very calm after he kept persisting, eventually the officer very calmly said you must go to Mae Sai on the 26 April for another 15 days if you want to stay. Clearly at that point he understood I had just got the 90 days the day before and didn't want to loose any more face. He went on to say my wife must report me living in her house every six weeks. I then went to another official in the main building and asked there what is the story and he stapled the document they gave my wife into my passport and said don't worry about it. Who can tell me what the correct procedure is? Remember I report my address four times a year at Mae Sai and one time every 15 months to a Thai consul in Australia when renewing my visa. Thanks for any help and must say I would be most grateful if Ubonjoe replies.

They were saying she needed to do a TM30 and you got the receipt for it. It only has to be done once unless you move to another house. There certainly is no requirement to do it every 6 weeks.

Yes, the OP was victim of another bit of arbitrary and incorrect obfuscation by a particularly ignorant and PRICKly Chiang Mai Immigration minion.

I recall last year that there were some posts about the Udon Thani Immigration office handing out the TM30's to guys filing extensions or doing their 90-day reporting and asking that they get their wives, partners or landlords to fill them in and bring them back. Some were concerned that it was more than just the local Immi guys using a shortcut to get the forms filed and they were seeking Thai's who may not be reporting their rental incomes for taxes, etc..

as it happens my visa ran out on Jan' 27 and on that day I went to Mai Sai and got stamped in for another ninety days, just like I have done for the past 17 years,

You can also obtain a 60 days extension of stay for Bt 1,900. That extends the time between border runs to 150 days, and between visa to almost 17 months.

Thanks Ubonjoe and others, just what I need to know.
