My best mate came off his bike 15 months ago in Phuket, although he was not going that fast it was quite serious so much so I have just got back from visiting him in hospital in the UK and he is still recovering and learning how to function now 15 months on, still going to be a very long time until he can do basic things (he damaged his brain stem)...

initially he was taken to Vachuri in Phuket and it was a real hassle to get the insurance company to cough up and get him to Bangkok Int Hospital to get the care he really needed, he was in ICU for months in Bangkok Int before being flown back to the UK... although they did cough up in the end, it took many many calls for them to pay out, they wanted to see pictures of his helmet/bike etc and wait for his blood tests to check alcohol levels, they wanted to do all this prior to paying out. We all mucked in to get this info to the insurance company and constantly bombard them with calls/emails/faxs to do so, if we wasn't there to do that and organize pictures, calls etc he would never have got the payout.

Now as we was all there to constantly hassle the insurance company daily it eventually got sorted out yet I cannot imagine what would have happened if we did not go there to sort this out for him. I would say to anyone riding a bike here, make sure you have your insurance details written down clearly in Thai/English in your pocket/wallet so if you are unable to call someone can on your behalf.

Also make sure you go slow and wear a decent helmet. My friend was wearing one of those skid pans they call helmets here, really these are not going to help much so get a proper helmet.

So although they did pay up, and eventually paid to have him flown to the UK in an air ambulance which cost millions of bhat, they annoyed me at first waiting for all this info as my friend was getting worse and worse in Vachuri Hospital (no fault of the vachuri hospital he just needed really specialist care).

The op has made a good point here, and I am pretty sure most of us don't have an international license which covers 125cc bikes making your insurance void, my friend was a really good rider yet he still came off, so be careful all as seeing my mate like this has really made me re-consider getting on a bike.

Stay safe all,

Cheers
