PHUKET: -- The emergence of colonies of red and purple coloured jellyfish off the coast of Koh Phi Phi in recent days has sparked fear among some villagers and tourists that another, more deadly quake is nigh.

Some tourists had reported itching sensations after swimming in the area off Phi Phi where jellyfish were spotted.

Following the latest quakes, photos of the jellyfish began to circulate on social media, initially posted by Facebook user Varaporn Aekpradit.

Social media consumers soon began to speculate that it was a sign from nature that another, more devistating earthquake may occur soon.

However, authorities are urging residents not to entertain superstition and speculation at this point, since it is quite normal for colonies of jellyfish to emerge with the shifting of the monsoon winds – from the northeast to the soutwest – during this time of year.

In March, villagers thought that the emergence of millions of crabs on a beach in Krabi was also a sign from nature.

On May 8, a sick dolphin washed ashore in Phuket, and later died en route to research centre, but the exact cause of sickness has yet to be determined.

I hope the fearful tourists does not include farang tourists. Most of us not so stupid as to see jellyfish as warning of earth quake. Well, maybe majority....

Does include I'm afraid. Superstition is a universal thing, plenty of western university graduates believing in astrology for instance. A few years ago some well known Brazilian "psychic" felt the need to predict another large tsunami at the Andaman coast, it caused quite a few westerners to change their travel plans. The thing really had an economical impact, as far as I am concerned they should have sent the guy to jail for a few years.

It's that deep respect for science and critical thinking again.

Science is only awareness. And it certainly served many people from the Andaman Islands well before the 2004 tsunami.

They read the signs well and moved to higher ground. Too bad the hadn't shared their 'science' with the many victims of the tsunami.

this jelly fish thing is probably a load of hocus pocus but it pays, in my opinion to learn from nature and not always disregard.take for example birds, they often give warning of impending doom.however tucked away in some bar with beautiful ladies and 10-12 chang under the belt......who cares!tongue.png

It's time to stop all these stupid comments, people! It is past being ridiculous and needs scientific exactitude.

Just haud on a wee minute till I find the chicken bones and I'll give you the definitive answer.... Location, magnitude, date and time.

Oooh. Look at my coffee grounds. The lottery numbers are....

Presuming some kind of instinct is causing jellyfish to congregate near the shore and crabs to appear on a beach because of an up coming earth quake / tsunami ... why did the "instinct" cause them to go to a place where they would be washed inland with the incoming wave?

Because it's crap.

Hold that thought. I am going to kill a chicken and read its entrails. I will get back to you with the results. I have to use this method as my Tarot card reader is gone to a re-ed centre. She was called in for spreading false rumors and charging money for her "expert" advice. No one is safe.
