PM: Govt strives to help the poor amid sluggish economy

BANGKOK, 5 June 2015 (NNT) – Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has admitted that the Thai economy is recovering slowly due to external factors while affirming the government will continue to find measures to assist low-income earners and uplift their quality of life.

Prime Minister Prayut commented on the overall condition of the Thai economy, saying recovery is being impeded by the slowdown in people’s spending and uncertainties in the world economy. Nonetheless, he cited tourism as the top performer due to its steady growth, indicating that it signifies foreign visitors’ confidence in their safety and the stability of the government.

In the face of the economic doldrums, the premier insisted that the government has been striving to support farmers and the impoverished and has never been complacent to their needs. For agriculturists, he said working land has been allocated to many while a management plan for water sources for agricultural use has been adopted.

Furthermore, Gen Prayut added that a new project has been launched to increase the potential of village and community funds. The project is aimed to improve the well-being of residents, increase their access to loan sources and enable them to open their own SME businesses.

"increase their access to loan sources and enable them to open their own SME businesses."

innovative businesses like more hair salons, massage parlors, laundries, convenience stores, street food carts, karaoke bars, lucky SIM card shop, cellphone case store, loud scooter muffler shop ...

Increase their access to loans sources= increase in debt.

All to easy to throw 20K baht at a potential business person, but unless rhe have a sound business plan, with a profit to show at then end, then they shouldn't even offer such loans.

Oh look, I've just got 50K baht to open a hair salon....oh look the iPhone 6 plus, bet thats super fast!!

6 months down the line, no hair salon and 50K baht in debt!!

"...overall condition of the Thai economy, saying recovery is being impeded by the slowdown in people’s spending and uncertainties in the world economy..."

...and not one mention of the military takeover...

A slowdown in people's spending might be because the economy isn't doing to well...humm...a chicken and egg paradox.

Uncertainties in the world economy...you mean other countries aren't buying Thai goods (exports) because the baht is weak.

And why is the baht weak? I'm sure it has nothing to do with the military takeover and no Democracy in sight.

When is he going to start taking tours of farms and factories to provide guidance?

I wonder if he really believes "external factors" vs internal incompetence is the reason behind the worst performing economy in SE Asia.

When is he going to pay for the 2013 harvest, that would solve a lot of the problems. i'm sick and tired of hearing ''We have to sell the rotting poor quality rice first''. We sold them 50 tons of top quality rice, they let it rot not us, we have a receipt from the government for our rice but apparently the Thai governments word isn't worth the paper it's printed on

the baht is strong, not weak ...

My Wife (just arrived back there) indicated her plan to sell food at the roadside near her village (6am - 9am) - which had been sparse in such traders - is now crawling with such vendors, so it's already a big problem, its just the government (hours by bus and light years from financial realities) is unaware of the plight of the majority of its people ... and this problem is growing .....

Clean up the country, hire people to pick up garbage along the streets, ditches and roads. Give the

farmers something to do in there communities. Not something for nothing. This will help tourism.

On the west coast put Rohingya migrants to work, in Pattaya use Cambodians. Workfare that

will help tourism. thumbsup.gif

And the very next day, as Forbes magazine published a list of the filthiest of the filthy rich in Thailand, the generals announced their intention to abandon the 300 baht minimum wage on which millions of Thais had been pinning their hopes for a (slightly) better life.

Well, they do say the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

And Gen. Prayut's first act will be -

To Scrap the Nationwide Minimum Wage.

Business owners in each province will decide for the province what employee minimum wage will be acceptable in consideration to their profit needs.

Gen. Prayut should also act -

To Scrap Equality of All Thai People.

It is all the rest of the world's fault... nothing to do with the many problems in Thailand !!! As for the rest of the report, meaningless government speak at its best.

Well if you are a developing exporter held up on wages of 300 baht or less, the domestic market isn't very attractive.

But, of course what u should do apparently is make it really hard for people to invest in your country.... That really helps.
