Sick daughter can't do a visa run

Featured Replies

just a question. What if our daughter is sick when we're about to do jour visa run? any alternatives? Thank you

If she is sick enough to be really unable to travel as certified by a proper doctor, then she can get a temporary extension.

She can get up to 90 days extension from Immigration.

If she provides evidence from a doctor that she is too sick to travel.

2.25 In the case of receiving medical treatment, attending rehabilitation, or taking care of a patient:

A. In the case of receiving medical treatment, attending rehabilitation, or taking care of a patient:

Permission shall be granted for no more than 90 days.

A. In the case of receiving medical treatment, attending rehabilitation, or taking care of a patient:

(1) Must have been confirmed and requested by a physician of the hospital or state medical institution providing said treatment with full explanation about the illness, period of treatment, and the physician's opinion that the illness is an impediment to travel.

(2) In the case of taking care of a patient, the applicant must have been confirmed and requested by a physician of the hospital or state medical institution providing the examination and treatment or by an embassy or consulate.

(3) In the case of caretakers who are not the parents, spouse, children, adopted children, or spouse's children, permission shall be granted for no more than one person.

Her medical extension can also include one for a caregiver.

If I remember correctly the daughter is six years old !

No consequence if she misses a boarder run apart from an overstay stamp .

Suspect this question is motivated by other "issues"

Most cases I have been involved with like this. You have to have her in a hospital. Immigration sends there officers to the hospital. Then the officer has to get the extension signed off my there Dr.....I dealt with an Immigration Dr in Bkk once. I had a person in the ICU, was never going to exit the hospital and the Immigration Dr was horrid to deal with. So my advice, dont wait till the last min. go ask at Immigration in person.....as it seems no service is 100% standerdized.

Most of the private hospitals will assist patients (and their families) with visa and immigration matters, but you often have to bring the situation to their attention and make a big deal about it. The correct department to see is "customer service". You need to do this while someone is still admitted as an in-patient and before they go on overstay -- ideally at least a week or more before they go on overstay. If someone is a patient at a private hospital, they're paying a premium price and assistance with Immigration is one of the services they can reasonably expect to receive.

It's much more difficult if someone is admitted to gov't hospital. A friend or family member is going to have to ask the local immigration office what documents are needed and be sure the hospital completes the forms properly. Local requirements may vary. Here in Chiang Mai, I've never known Immigration to send an officer out to the hospital to check whether someone is a patient, but they do expect to see photos of someone in hospital and have been known to call the hospital and talk with the ward nurse. It's difficult to obtain a medical extension for someone who is under doctor's care, but not in a hospital and almost impossible to obtain a medical extension once someone is on overstay. You see -- there is nothing to "extend". The permission to stay or visa have expired.
