Fisheries Department: Seafood shortages unlikely

PNSOC580712001002705_12072015_113502.jpe

BANGKOK, 13 July 2015 (NNT) – Fisheries Department Director-General stated that seafood supply shortage is very unlikely as currently over 30,000 legal vessels are still operating normally.

The Director-General of the Department of Fisheries Joompol Sanguansin detailed the current situation of fishing activities in the 22 seaside provinces, which has been put under monitoring from 1 July 2015, confirming that the situation is returning to normality.

He has said that more vessels had completed the port-in and port-out reports in order to sail out in the past 4-5 days, and it is expected that more fishing vessels will operate in the next week. The prices of seafood products had seen minor increases in some provinces where there are no goods freezing facilities.

The Department of Fisheries Director-General added that the number of operating legal vessels weighing over 30 tonnes is at 3,661 while the number of operating legal vessels weighing under 30 tonnes is at 25,313. These vessels will be fishing as usual, alleviating any concerns in seafood shortages.

Govt-students 'ceasefire' has not cleared the air

Constructive dialogue must follow the activists' release

BANGKOK: -- Student activism and military autocracy or dictatorship are like oil and water. Although the tension caused by the recent arrest of 14 anti-government student activists has subsided following their temporary release, all fingers have remained crossed. Such a confrontation was always dangerous in "black and white" times, and it's a lot more so when Thailand is badly divided, when either "black" or "white" can be seen as grey.
