Best viewpoints, spots, twisted roads in Northern Thailand?

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I just bought a 4x4 Caribian and I plan to do a very long trip throughout Northern Thailand.

I am NOT limited in time and I would definitely check out all the known places such as Pai, Mae Hong Son, Phu Chee Fah, Phu Lang Ka etc. but as I am not local to Northern Thailand, I would HIGHLY appreciate if the nice members of this forum could give me some "inside tips" on the less known places, spots, viewpoints which I should also check out during my trip.

I'd also love to learn on interesting, twisted roads to drive through, similar to the amazing road from Meo Vac to Dong Van in Vietnam as driving these roads turned out to be the highlight of my trip in Northern Vietnam and I'm sure will be the same in Thailand (if I found these roads ;)

Thank you very much for your help!

Do what a lot of the bike guys do, get off the black top and find your own trails.

Let Google Maps be your friend.

The places you have mentioned are a great start, some of the roads that follow the Myanmar and Lao borders are reputed to be exciting.

go look at gt riders forum an buy his "golden triangle loop " map

I am heading up to northerner Thailand next week after a quick drive down to Penang

Route will be

Hua hin- Mae sot- Mae Hong son-

Chiang Mai-Chiang Dao-Fang- Mae Ai- Doi Mae Salong-Thoed Thai ( khun sa's home)- Mae Fah Luang- - Chiang Rai- Thung Ngiew ( just south of Chiang Khong) - Phu Chi Fah-Chiang Kham- Nan- Sukothai

Safe travels!!!

As suggested gt rider is a good place to look for routes and maps. Thailand has been on the tourist track for generations so anything accessible and worth seeing has already been posted on the internet and is well known. The adventure comes from deciding on a route that will take you to as many places as time allows and whether you go clockwise or counter clockwise.

Chiang Rai - Chiang Kham - Nan province road was once called the vomit highway. You can imagine why. Been through that route. Quite scenic as some points. Mae Suai - to Wawi (Stop at Doi Khad Phee), then proceed downhill (northwards) to Chiang Mai. Return to Chiang Rai via Mae Chan. ALl paved road (Black top).

Hoy Mae Sai is a hill tribe village (different than Mae Sai town) It's nw of Chiang Rai, about 20 miles. waterfalls, hiking trails, dirt roads......
