Pheu Thai’s ex-spokesman and another MP to serve one-year jail term

BANGKOK: -- Former Pheu Thai party spokesman Prompong Nopparit and former Pheu Thai MP f Udon Thani Kiat-udom Menasawat are to spend one year in prison after the Supreme Court upheld the Appeals Court’s guilty verdict for defaming Mr Wasant Soipisut, former president of the Constitutional Court.

The defamation lawsuit was lodged with the Criminal Court on June 15, 2010 against Mr Prompong and Mr Kiat-udom by Mr Wasant who accused the duo of telling the media that he allowed representatives of the Democrat party to see him while the court was considering a court case against the Democrat party which could lead to the party’s dissolution.

The Criminal Court found the two Pheu Thai MPs’ accusation against Mr Wasant groundless and not an honest expression of opinion. It sentenced both of them to one-year imprisonment which was suspended for two years and fined each of them 50,000 baht.

The two defendants appealed the verdict to the Appeals Court. In the conviction verdict, the court said that Mr Prompong was well educated and held teaching jobs at several universities while Mr Kiat-udom sat in several parliamentary committees and, therefore, both of them should be a role model of the society.

The Appeals Court scrapped the fine for both defendants but imposed one-year jailterm on both of them without any suspension.

The two men appealed the verdict to the Supreme Court which upheld the Appeals Court’s verdict.

After hearing the Supreme Court’s verdict, Mr Prompong said briefly that he was still all right. They were later whisked away by corrections officials to serve their term in prison.

hahahahah, about time these cretins served their sentences, using their political positions as an excuse to avoid it is no longer valid. Now lets see all those that are avoiding their sentences under the same reasons tossed in jail, that includes all sides of the political fence.

Corruption is about more than money - such as highly politicised courts, and stacking of public departments with Yes-men.

Question is, when the enemy has been put down and put away, how long before this loose anti-red coalition breaks up and starts turning on their own.

PROMPONG'S CASE
Pheu Thai spokesman jailed for defaming former Constitutional Court president

BANGKOK: -- The Supreme Court Friday jailed Pheu Thai spokesman Prompong Nopparit and former Pheu Thai MP Kiartudom Menasawat one year for having defamed former Constitutional Court president Wasant Sroypisut.

The Supreme Court upheld the defamation conviction against the two former MPs and upheld the one-year jail term handed down on them by the Appeals Court.

Wasant filed a defamation lawsuit against Prompong and Kiartudom on June 15 2010, saying that the two held a press conference to defame him on June 8 2010.

The suit stated that the two unfoundedly alleged him with acting improperly and violating the code of ethic of judges and lacking justice and neutrality when handling the party dissolution case against the Democrat Party.

The suit stated that the two former Pheu Thai MPs alleged Wasant with allowing a representative to meet him in private before the Constitution Court ruled in favour of the Democrat.

On July 31, the Criminal Court convicted the two for defaming Wasant and gave them one year jail term and a fine of Bt50,000 each.

Prompong and Kiartudom appealed against the ruling. On December 12, 2013, the Appeals Court upheld the conviction and gave them one-year jail term without suspension. The Appeals court lifted the fine.

They appealed against the ruling with the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court ruled that their allegation against Wasant was groundless so the court upheld the one-year jail term sentence against them.

Kind of like the feline species in the wild and even those domesticated. The new biggest and meanest beast will kill the nursing young so as the female will come back in season, breed, produce and thus a new litter with basically a identical behavior gene pattern will come out of the bushes in a few months and the cycle will continue to be repeated.if the same or similar gene pool is allowed to continue being dominate.

There is a method of taking the unwanted physical, and mental features out of the equatation when trying to improve or eliminate a undesirable feature. it is commonly referred to as casterating or neutering. There seems to be a huge number of individuals that should be prime canadates for this procedure, then maybe this country would have a run at becoming developed, industrialized and recongized as such by the rest of the countries that are so envied.

Court rulings like this certainly do send out a message.

The fun and games are over and if you want to continue playing this "old" game, then expect any leniancy shown prior to be thrown out and something harsher to take its place.

Thailand.. you made my day!

I also disagree with all types of criminal defamation laws but, if some one really has to go to jail for it, then Promprong is an excellent choice. What a prat taking the risk of appealing a 50k fine which is just a slap on the wrist for a corrupt politician.

Let's hope we see some prison sentences for crimes that really deserve it like corruption. Boonsong, Yingluck's former commerce minister, would be another excellent choice for fake G2G rice exports to China scandal. A little bird told me that he planned to flee abroad a long time ago but was ordered to stay and take it like a man by his boss in Dubai. Him fleeing would make Pheua Thai's protestations of innocence re the rice pledging fiasco sound more hollow than they do already and this would have negative connotations for the boss's sister's criminal case. Thus things could go badly for Boonsong's family in Thailand, if he disobeyed orders and legged it.

You're right. There are many recongized degenurates who are canadates for catseration, and they should be taken out of the equatation.

Not sure anyone should go to jail for defamation, but if anyone should, it would be Prompong.

Under these sort of circumstances it would seem particularly critical that truth be considered a complete defense. Unfortunately, it is not.

Ah beautiful,

all the apologists for the junta right on cue....

As usual you got it wrong, bob, but we are getting used to it.

Not junta apologists at all, we have nothing to apologize for, but these scumbag pin-up boys of yours certainly do.

You really must learn the difference between a legit junta supporter and someone who does not support them while having a distinct "dislike" ??? for anyone tarred with the Shin brush.

Maybe then you can post comments that are not based on bs.

Capice ? cheesy.gif

So your saying the guy told the truth .. and the sentence is unjust ?

If so.. stupid remark because if it was true it was no defamation and the guy would have used this defense. He could not prove it so it was not the truth.

Well Gee Mikemac, I don't recall mentioning anyone's name in my post.... but of course if you think I am referring to you (apologist for the junta) then go right ahead.

If the cap fits... wear it!

the court said that Mr Prompong was well educated and held teaching jobs at several universities while Mr Kiat-udom sat in several parliamentary committees and, therefore, both of them should be a role model of the society.

More of this please.

There is more to these official positions than nice cars and luxury dining, the role also comes with a solemn responsibility to behave honourably and to be an entirely positive influence on the younger generation. Bringing disgrace to office is to insult the nation, it shows contempt for all the hard-working citizens who fund and believe in the structures of governance. Sentences should reflect the seriousness of the official position itself, alongside the seriousness of the offences. There are many highly-educated and honest people waiting in line to take the place of the corrupt and disgraced. They can be easily replaced by more worthy persons, and it is long past time they started behaving accordingly.

You said - ...................."all the apologists for the junta right on cue".................. then just who were you referring to ? The seven or eight posters who commented on the story before you did ? The ones who agreed with this dirtbag being sent to prison ?

Are they "all the apologists" or are there more ?

Maybe I will PM each one of them and ask them if they are junta apologists just to see how accurate your comment was.

I have a feeling I already know what the outcome will be.

More political prisoners anther thing for the junta to try and cover up.

How do you connect this case to the junta?

- The offences were committed several years before the junta acted or even existed.

- Many folks will recall this guys loud mouth, often including words and delivery which were intimidating to many, and that he had no hesitation in the past to tell lies and convenient twists.
