Owners of fishing vessels told to register quickly or will miss out the chance



BANGKOK: -- Owners of fishing boats who have not yet registered with the Ministry of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives were urged to rush up within July 31 deadline otherwise they will miss the chance because the deadline will not be extended, said Maj-Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd, deputy government spokesman, on Thursday.

He said authorities concerned had provided conveniences to facilitate the registration and also to shorten registration procedures for fishing vessels which are less than 10 gross tonnes.

However, he insisted that the ministry could not ease the IUU (illegal, unregistered and unreported) fishing rule because it is mandatory.

Altogether 42,000 fishing vessels have been registered, including 6,600 which have their fishing gears registered as well. There are about 8,000 vessels which are yet to be registered.

Maj-Gen Sansern said that several of the fishing boats have refused to register because they no longer engage in fishing business while others are equipped with illegal fishing gears and, therefore, do not want to get registered.

Miss the chance, will they really ? Thailand as a country rarely responds to anything unless cornered so why should the fishing industry be any different and they've already forced the govt to back down ?

The deadline will not be extended according the the deputy government spokesman so let's see as this govt has proved it's initial strong stance on issues can be oh so flexible.

Probably if they don't get an extension then nothing will happen to them anyway. A week strike or a few boats fined causing all to fear will cease them from going out and make the gov back down again....

Thailand remains on the Tier 3 list until the next report covering 2015 but the USA has extended its GSP (favorable tariffs) to Thailand through 2016.

So there is no real incentive now for the Junta to crackdown on registrations for the remainder of 2015. I would expect the Junta will grant further extensions to contain the conflict with boat owners.

The TIP isn't the real threat to the Thai fishing industry the threat of the EU banning the import of Thai seafood is the reason the Thais have made some attempt at appeasing the EU.

They seem to care more about profits from exports, than humanitarian efforts to end the slavery of the vulnerable.

...any figures on how many illegal vessels actually registered.......I doubt it very much........

My guess is that they'll keep fishing illegally and transfer their catches to registered boats.

The owners of these vessels know the "deadline" means nothing at all. They can register whenever they want to, its not as if the powers that be will not be registering anymore ships ever. They will have to be able to register new ships at any time.

All Thailand cares about it wealth and power - end of story.

So what is the Government going to do the first of August? go and put all NON registered and Illegal aquiped boats on a chain and put everybody in jail? not likely going to happen,The Government have not got the power and balls to do this.

Supposedly 1 in 4 boats not registered by the deadline.

I have no idea what that means overall or how accurate the figure are, does the govt know how many boats there are given so many operating illegally ?

Seems many aren't too afraid of the govt and their threats but backing down on issues hardly sends the correct signal and just appealing for something to be done definitely doesn't work.
