What will be open on the public holiday this week?

Featured Replies

Will Central, supermarkets etc be open? Only in town 1 day and need to stock up a few things....stupidly forgot it's a holiday....

If you're talking about Mother's Day (coinciding with the Queen's Birthday) on 12 August then I'm relatively certain everything should be open.

I understand it's a no-alcohol sales day, but I think most retail stores and restaurants will be open on August 12. I'm not sure about banks, and I'm pretty sure schools are closed.

I don't remember that being the case last year...where did you hear that? I was under the impression that only Buddhist holidays were "no alcohol sales" days.

I share the same date and we will be purchasing alcoholic beverage prior to the 12th.

It's definitely a bank holiday; see:-

Don't know where you got the no alcohol bit from; can't remember bar closures on this day in Pattaya any time over the last 20 years. See also:-

However with the present lot in charge I guess anything can happen; and no one will have a clue until the police turn up at 15 minutes past midnight on the 12th.

I thought the unmentionables were against alcohol bans on birthdays. But the jobsworths/bureaucrats know better bah.gif

Doesn't affect me, I stock up...

thank you -good links****.

The Queen's birthday is not normally a 'no alcohol' day. Some bars may close to give their staff Mother's Day off.

John's Place at least, used to, close on Mother's Day. I'm sure it gave the employees some time to spend with their grandchildren. I think many bars will close for the day, but you can still buy at 7-11...I would double check, though, as I would hate to take the blame for a case of the DTs.

Thanks! Have to buy some kids stuff, so not really worried about the alcohol...though I may need it when I add up the cost of shopping!

Too funny.

It seems to be quite 1995 in Thai Visa about bank holidays and closings. Bank offices may close but

1. ATMs never do and almost all banking transactions can be done kerbside, and,

2. Bank branches in malls, extremely numerous and with far more expansive opening hours than the standalone buildings, can handle the very few problems that ATMs can't.

There really is no such thing as bank closings or holidays in Thailand, unless you have an immediate need to see the vice-president at the bank's headquarters.

Alcohol sales are quite legal on the Queen's birthday, which is NOT the same as "will be permitted". Rule of law is not a strong point of the current authorities. Expect all kinds of restrictions that have nothing to do with the law, which is exactly what the pro-coup people asked for. It is well known to General Sarit II, for example, that anyone who takes a drop of alcohol on Her Majesty's birthday automagically hates royalty. Hey, it's what you asked for, and you've got it, good and hard.

Schools definitely close (as do government offices apart from essential services) on the Queen's birthday and all other official, national holidays. That's why they are called national holidays.

And yes, stores catering to the public, markets and so on will all be open, as will restaurants of all types. Alcohol sales will be regulated and enforced in an absolutely arbitrary and lawless manner, where "absolutely" is an absolute word.
