Officials detain Vietnamese fishing vessels operating in Thai waters

SONGKHLA, 15 August 2015 (NNT) - The Royal Thai Navy Region 2 apprehended two Vietnamese fishing vessels carrying 19 crewmen while operating in Thai waters.

The vessels were towed to a port in Songkhla Province for investigation. The 2 boats were discovered while fishing sea cucumbers north of Koh Kra, off the coast of Nakhon Si Thammarat. After inquiring the captains, the officials found that all the 19 crew on the fishing vessels were from Kamao, Vietnam.

Initially the officials arrested them for illegal entry and fishing in violation of the 1979 immigration and the 1939 Right to Fish in Thai Waters acts. The Vietnamese embassy has been informed of the incident and will work with Thai officials to deport these fishermen to Vietnam.

This is the 22nd time in 12 months that Vietnamese trawlers had been apprehended in Thai waters, involving 75 vessels in total.

how many Thai flagged vessels have been caught/detained outside of Thai fishing territory during this same time frame? At least they were using their own countrymen to crew their vessels.

Please try to stay on topic.

Any Thais found fishing in other waters are clearly innocent, as the pole star was knocked out of position by some random astronomical event, or the US sent the incorrect GPS information from the satellites, or the sun did a sideways shift preventing accurate navigation.

And anyway the Thais were probably restocking foreign fishing grounds and not taking fish, as some would incorrectly claim.

Indonesia catches a thai boat fishing in their waters with slave labour onboard so now the response is to show up another country. Why is it that there is always a follow up to any story that shows thais did wrong. One thai man rapes several young girls (a few weeks ago) then the following day they go on about farang teachers to be vetted to see if their is any paedophiles teaching schools in thailand. This face thing is crazy. facepalm.gif

Obviously, something more than naval interdiction needs to be done to cease illegal Vietnamese fishing. There needs to be a G2G discussion and resolution on the matter. It's called DIPLOMACY. But that often has not been a successful approach by the Junta - too much like politics.

Otherwise, Thailand has accepted the status quo. Illegal fishing can continue if boats are not physically stopped.

Yes. If the first dozen of those boats were properly impounded, instead of the Harbour Master and a dozen Fisheries people being paid off, there would not have been a further 60 odd boats coming in and pillaging.

It sounds like a very lucrative career for all those officials, and it sounds like they need to up the price because the Viet Namese obviously feel it's still worth it.

Its simple Thais and Vietnamese and who else all do it so its clearly not only the Thai. For those who say this is recent, I have seen reports of this dating back way before the fishing crackdown. This is not something new and this is what the navy should be doing instead of begging for subs.
