Rescuers have retrieved only Rp 700 million ($50,192) of Rp 6.6 billion on board a Trigana Air plane that crashed in Papua last week, an official said on Friday, as reported by The Jakarta Globe.

The funds had been designated to assist underdeveloped villages in the province.

Of the amount recovered, more than Rp 200 million in bills were damaged, said Franciscus XH, chief of Papua’s state-run postal service Pos Indonesia, which was in charge of delivering the funds from the provincial capital of Jayapura to Pegunungan district, the site of the crash.

Indonesia Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) head Air Vice Marshall Sulistyo confirmed the figure, saying that after days of searching, the undamaged bank notes recovered at the site added up to Rp 536.1 million

Papua Police chief Paulus Waterpauw declined to comment.

The money, which came from the Ministry of Social Affairs, was insured and any damaged bills could be replaced by the central bank, Franciscus said.

The ATR-42 twin turboprop plane operated by Trigana Air Service crashed in the Pegunungan Bintang district on Sunday with 49 passengers and five crew on board.

Apparently no one is surprised that approx $450,000 (US equivalent) is missing. Bet a lot of villagers will soon be running around in shiny new vehicles (or moving to nicer homes in better locations).

Shiny new vehicle in a remote jungle village? oh yes.

Could it be that those 700 millions of old money have weighted the plane down and prevented

it from preforming as expected? was the plane too heavy?

In total there was 6.6 billion rupee on the plane. assuming all the notes were rp100,000 and they weighed 1 gram each the weight of the money would be 66 kg's.

Are they sure everyone was accounted for? Who was first on the scene? A little private salvaging? Wow can you just see the smiles on the faces of the first responders? Mana from heaven. The Gods Must Indeed Be Crazy.

So, roughly one tenth of the money was found....how far and wide was the debris? Is it possible that only one tenth ever made it into the cargo hold and that the crash was "anticipated". The money was insured, too...so nobody but the insurance company loses.

Absolutely crazy throwing down all that kindling to start the fire for the next cannibal cookout.

Now that I think about it, have they accounted for all the remains of the passengers and crew?
