Redshirt Leader Vows to Defy Charter Campaign Ban

By Khaosod Eng.

BANGKOK — A top leader of the Redshirt movement announced a campaign to reject the military junta’s draft constitution will be organized if it goes to a national vote next year.

Nattawut Saikua, a leader of Redshirt umbrella organization, vowed yesterday to organize a “no” vote days after a government official said any such effort to campaign for or against the new charter would not be allowed, citing the military junta’s ban on political activity.

“Now that the government can see that many sides are not pleased by the charter draft, they may use bureaucratic power as their tools, and whoever campaigns against the charter will face many forms of state power,” said Nattawut, a leader of the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship. “But the UDD isn’t worried because there will be more damage if Thailand has to live under undemocratic conditions for a long time.”

The draft charter will go to voters in early January should the junta-appointed council vote to endorse it Sunday. Should that happen, Nattawut said Redshirt leaders will swiftly hold a news conference to announce their effort to see it defeated.

Prominent politicians from Thailand’s rival factions have criticized the new constitution, which would be Thailand’s 20th, as undemocratic. It's been drafted by a body handpicked by the military junta which seized power in May 2014.

Nattawut’s criticism may surprise few, given the the political party widely supported by Redshirts was ousted in the coup.

"Nattawut’s criticism may surprise few, given the the political party widely supported by Redshirts was ousted in the coup"

This is not 'criticism'...It is a 'call to action" in spite of all Junta threats.

And it is not disaffection about the coup, although in another context that is certainly present.

It is an anti-constitution statement. Their position is an enviable one. It is not difficult to make a case against a charter designed and written by an electoral minority in a totally unrepresentative and non-inclusive manner. The undemocratic nature of it is as plain as the 'nose on your face". That is not a thing which is easy to defend.

As mentioned in the article, only state power can prevent this easy challenge.

Its clearly not a constitution that affords the wholesale rorting of the system as has been allowed to occur in the past.

Its time for all those disaffected by this situation to stamp their feet up and down and exercise their little tantrums screaming 'no fair, no fair'.

What's to good of running a country if you can grab everything you can, like a big game of supermarket sweep, where you get to keep everything you collect as you run around shovelling untold obscene wealth into your basket.

Boo Hoo Suckers, accountability is a b!tch

Your third paragraph, "What's to good of running a country if you can grab everything you can, like a big game of supermarket sweep, where you get to keep everything you collect as you run around shovelling untold obscene wealth into your basket.", is exactly what the backers of the junta government are doing, and have been doing for generations. It is why they engineered the coup, and is why they are determined that "their" government will remain in power. That is what the charter is intended to achieve.

Problem is a NO vote Army stay's

YES vote Army stay's (behind the scenes for now)

same same but not different

strategically, everyone against the coup and for democracy should have been on the streets from May 22nd on, and they should have stayed there regardless of the junta's harassment and intimidation.

I understand why many did not do that. The junta crackdown was harsh and immediate.

The fact that Yingluck did not speak out immediately and that Thaksin ordered the PTP to go into appeasement mode shows what that side is made of... not much backbone.

On the other hand, now there is something concrete to look at ... and all the Thai people can see the obvious and obscene distortion of democracy that this "most progressive constitution ever" (uuuwaack bah.gif ) stands for ...

Now that the turd has been rolled, there is a concrete choice.

You choice is right and wrong. If the constitution is rejected, then the junta stays... right - for a while.

If the constitution is accepted, then the junta and this anti-democracy in sheep's clothing stays for a decade or longer.

If it is rejected, the junta has a big problem - because they really want this turd. This turd (they think) has "thai-style democracy' perfume on it and they believe that the rest of the world won't notice what that bad smell is underneath.

If the constitution is rejected, then the perfume wears off. Then the turd smells just like a turd.

And they will have a hard time rolling a new one.

Thailand has been going down a rough road ever since the plan for the coup was hatched. There are still lots of bumps ahead.

Nattawaut said in December, 2013 - "we Thai people have completely shut the door to a coup. We will never let it happen, not in any form". “For the Thai people, once there is a coup, they will immediately rise against it." Never happened. Political white noise by an irrelevant entity trying to gain traction again. All lies.

Jatuporn Promphan said on April the 4th, 2014 that the red shirts had vowed to fight back if the country's judicial institutions and oversight agencies tried to remove the government. Never happened. Political white noise by an irrelevant entity trying to gain traction again. All lies.

Nattawut said on the 3rd of August, 215 “So, next week I intend to invite all UDD leaders to wear red shirts and host a press conference about red-whiskered bulbuls in Thailand. I am sure I will get permission. I will let you know about the details later.” Never happened. Political white noise by an irrelevant entity trying to gain traction again. All lies.

Nattawut Saikua vowed yesterday to organize a “no” vote.

I am surprised these guys are still given air time and taken seriously. They are becoming more and more irrelevant by the day and the desperation of continually lying and making statements that they never follow through on is just becoming a predictable narrative by this spent force now.

Just nod your head and pretend to agree with him now and move on. In a few days he will have another statement he will not follow through on.

If they were a spent force, why not call an election and let the people decide.? Let the elected government draft the constitution?

Heaven forbid, after all according to your propaganda they have about 93% support. No, its fools like you that are the problem. One day you may even realise it but probably not.

And yet another reason to NOT support these so-called and self-appointed "representatives of grassroots people" who seem to speak out of their asses whenever the inopportune occasion arises. Not that they would differ from the junta and "establishment", who unfortunately display the very same features. A country fought over by clowns. It's really hard to make a serious choice at any ballot who to vote in when all options you have are equally ridiculous.

BTW: Has anyone ever bothered to order an investigation why Nattawut, this oh so innocent and selfless defender of the common man and the downtrodden, the champion of democracy, is so wealthy?

Sure...have an election and the UDD run in that election. How many seats would they win? You do realise the UDD and PTP are not the same thing

Every government in the world is going to have corruption, I bet there is even corruption lurking somewhere in the current government.

However, when the people in power actively support corruption on a grand scale, something has to change.

The constitutional changes being drafted, are about ensuring that groups of like-minded wrong-ins can't congregate and set up systems of massive corruption like the rice pledging scam. Where Ms Yingsy believed she was' helping' the people by taking all their rice and all their money.

Along with people smuggling, slavery, wholesale graft etc. Governments must be seen to attack issues of the day that threaten the integrity of the government.

Of that government should be able to be scrutinized and removed. Its that bit which upset the red shirts. The idea that they can't steal unchallenged, for as long as they can keep buying elections.

BTW, they aren't real friends if they are only supporting you if you give them pocket money. And that's called election fraud.

I was up in Khon Kaen this month visiting my wife's farm. Even the wife's parents who until a few months ago were apathetically inclined were complaining about this junta. Everyone's pocketbook is being hit by these morons. People are not as stupid as the general thinks, they are not going to vote to effectively let the generals run this country since over the last 18 months they have destroyed any prospects for economic growth.

Yu'p not ezy to defend, and exactly why it's banned to criticize it by anyone.

But it will be spun and sugar coated, claims put out there to confuse the people until they don't know what is what, then they will have to vote on it.

Keep the people ignorant = keep the power.

BTW Thailand still has freedom of speech yeah, we were told that just the other day, remember.

Jamie are you talking about the present regime when you refer to the sentence " I am surprised these guys are still given airtime and taken seriously.....................................by this spent force now " ???

Listen to what the spokespersons of this regime are saying, contradicting each other on a daily basis as they have no idea what is going on!

Continually lying seems to be the norm for this lot in power, but you carry on believing their fairy stories.

As I have stated before I am not a fan of any political party here or in my home country, their all corrupt to the core!!

One of the more sensible, balanced and realistic posts sir, thank you!

A military junta a la Burma, but sugar coated, or a corrupt bunch of wannabee dictators a la Cambodia. Not much of a choice really.

Nat (and his mate Jat the hut) have outstanding court cases for their actions in the 2010 insurgency. Aren't they still out on bail pending an appeal of some sort or other?

Nat's sudden rise to wealth would indeed by interesting to investigate. Especially as a Nat Transport was apparently involved in clandestine movements of rice during the PTP golden years.

Interesting that the self appointed (or maybe someone else "sponsored" their appointment?) red shirt leads Nat, Jat and Arisman all did rather well financially since 2010.

But "unusual wealth" seems a taboo subject to any government here.

I thought Jatuporn explained his new found wealth quite well, "People like to give me things" he said as he displayed his Buddhist art work and the spare house he owns. He neglected to mention who these people are though.
