The Lenovo K3 T50 (2gb ram, 16 rom, 5.5" FHD display, 4G LTE) is getting a lot of good reviews. Lazada sells it for B7000 but it can be purchased online for $150 from Everbuy or Dealsmachine.

There is a T-30 version..lower specs and a 5" screen so be careful if you decide to order.

Zenphone 2

2.3ghz Intel cpu

4gb of ram

32 or 64gig storage

9999 or 11.990thb respectively

(watch out for the cheaper models, they have a 1.6 and 1.8ghz cpu and 2gb of ram but the top spec one is almost as fast as flagship devices )

I have just purchased my 2nd Microsoft 640XL ( RM-1096} 5.7' display Retails for US $199, 4G LTE and excellent camera, Runs Windows. I temporarily went to Android but I believe the Windows phones are superior, as long as the apps you use are in the windows store. I reckon this is the best value.

Just stay away from Windows Mobile. Music App never connects, App store is a joke, Maps yet another fail. The whole OS is cluncky. At the very least read some reviews. I tried to make the move away from iOS to Windows and it was one of my greatest regrets. Can't comment on Android. I see gmelbourne went form Android to Windows though so thats enough to keep me away if he thinks Windows Mobile is better. Ugh. At 10000 baht I would get a second hand iPhone 5S. Actually thats exactly what I did 3 months ago. I am sure if you look a bit you can get a similar deal although don't be surprised if you see it for 15000. Just stick to your guns. I realize the screen might be a little tight for you.

Maybe go to TrueMove H and DTACs websites to see what they're flogging? Plus they may have some decent discounts on HW and/or plans?

Asus Zenfone 2

Samsung Galaxy J7

LG G3

jumped out at sub 10K with 5.5" displays.

Can anyone recommend (or not recommend) the Oppo phones R5 and Find 7a on the Truemove shopping website link above. Or Oppo smartphones in General. I have read mixed reviews about Oppo.

Great post BTW.

Hi,

ALWAYS GET THE LATEST PHONE ON the market. your budget is 10K then dont look at mainstream Hawai,Hawai oppo and any branded phones from the mobile providers as they arelikely to be cheaper. NEVER go into a 12 month or more plan just a pay as you go or short plan as phones have a life of 1 year ,

Samsung Galaxy J7

The wife is due for a new mobile, and so we've been shopping around. She tends to prefer Samsung, and we too have a budget of under 10,000 for her new mobile. From all our/my researching, looking around, and test checking at the mobile shops, the Galaxy J7 looks like quite a nice phone for a list price locally of 8900b, but available for less from the smaller mobile shops. All the reviews I could find on the J7 were pretty positive, as well.

We looked at some of the other Samsungs and the ASUS line, but a lot of them now have non-user removable batteries, and we pretty much wanted a model with a replaceable battery, along with the other typical features like good cameras, good and large screen, support for LTE, SD card support and an after-sale support presence here in Thailand. The J7 ticked off all the boxes in that regard, in addition to running Lollipop OS.

The very similar J5 retails for about 1000b less, but has a 5 in screen instead of the J7's 5.5 inch screen, and has only an 8 GB ROM, instead of the J7's 16 GB. I believe both models have 1.5 GB RAM. For my wife, a 16GB / 1.5 GB mobile is going to be fine, but the 8 GB J5 would be too stingy on storage space.

The Zenfone 2 has a higher price than the J7 and also comes with a non-removeable battery. The LG G3, on the other hand, has a replaceable battery, but also is higher priced listing on DTAC, for example, at about 9500b. A very well reviewed phone, but my wife really isn't interested in getting an LG brand.

We also looked at the Galaxy A5, which is a bit older model but with similar specs to the J5 and J7 and a list price of about 9900b, but disqualified it for having a non-removeable battery.

Meanwhile, I wish I knew enough to have an informed opinion about the build quality and reliability of the mobiles by companies like Huawei and Oppo, but I have a hard enough time just keeping up with the others. So, I'm no help as regards to those brands.

PS - Microsoft is making some very nice and affordable mobile phone hardware via some of its better, moderate priced models. And I bought a Samsung Windows Mobile about a year back that was able to be upgraded to Windows Phone 8, so I've had some experience playing around with the brand and OS.

Unfortunately, while the OS may be OK, the app support and breadth of quality apps just isn't there compared to the Android ecosystem. Despite the coming arrival of Windows 10 for mobile, IMHO there's no clear sign that Windows mobile's market presence or apps footprint is likely to improve noticeably in the near future. If all you want is a phone for calling and a mobile camera, Windows phones are going to be fine. But if you're a user who relies on apps for services and functionality, it's just not there.

Hi John,

John I am a telecoms consultant and yes mainstream phones especially from a market leader are great but you pay thorugh the nose. as I said others are pretty good and discount their price as they are not leading the market. NOW most phones are moving to included storage as lots of memory caused damages to phones and manufacturer had to fix. but I think you have to go for a phone now with at least 64 memory as you wife will be app hungry once she has a new phone 55

Everyone uses their mobiles in different ways... But I can say for both my wife and I, we both have Samsung phones with SD card capability. And neither of us has ever used anywhere near 64 GB of storage on our mobiles, nor 32 GB, nor even 16 GB. And if someone was going to use a lot of space on their mobiles, it wouldn't be from apps, but rather from locally stored video and music files, which are far more space hogging than apps.

But, SD cards aside, some might well contend that as media consumption increasingly moves from local storage to streaming, the amount of local disk space required becomes less of a factor. Again, a lot depends on how any individual person chooses to use their particular device.

Not necessarily, a top end 2014 phone is substantially cheaper a year later, far better spec for your money than the equivalent new models in the market. A case in point is the vivo xshot, 9990bt, about 16k when introduced last year. Flagship specifications and top build quality, got one a few months ago and really impressed - great screen, great battery, great camera, very fast on 4g especially. Recently they rolled out the upgrade to Android kitkat, excellent phone for the money.

I think some of the smaller players may offer good value for money than the bigger players. So its worth considering the smaller players also.

BTW, how often are you meant to change your smartphone. Every year?

I agree with your comment.

I think you can get 2 maybe 3 years out of a smart phone these days as the new ones dont come onto the market with anything extra special as the market has matured in terms of features.

I disagree. The mobile phone market of today resembles the laptop and digital camera market of 10-12 years ago where each successive, close to twice a year new model roll-out brings improved specs for less money. Just last year, 1gb ram/8gb rom with 720p displays was the standard for mid-priced phones (B10,000+-), now 2gb ram/16gb rom is common, 1080p displays as well.

After Android-M (Marshmallow) rolls out early next year, expect 4/64 with FHD displays to fit that same price nitch. Also, with a probable economic slowdown almost inevitable, expect many of the Chinese manufacturers to start heavily discounting their phones. many of the names you see now won't be around in a couple of years.

This is my point. These high end specifications were really only in the flagship phones in 2014, many of which which are now available at around the 10k price tag. The vivo I mentioned has the 1080p display, 5.2" screen, good battery, 13mp rear camera and 8mp front (both with flash), 2gb/16gb, snapdragon 801 (2.3GHz quad core), LTE.... It actually has better specs than some of the newer 2015 models they've released at around the same price point. However if you want the 2015 flagship phones it'll be a few thousand baht more.

I've bought this one last week at an i-mobile shop:

5.5" full HD screen, Snapdragon 64bit Octacore CPU, 3 GB RAM, 32 GB ROM, Micro SD card, 4G, 20Mpx camera, etc.

http://www.siamphone.com/spec/en/i-mobile/iq_x_pro_2.htm

Price was 8900 Baht, including i-mobile 5600 MAh powerbank.

Additionally, i-Mobile had some kind of promotion and paid me 800 Baht for my three year old, i-mobile phone with a blown battery.
