SOUTH CRISIS
Thai state 'determined' to resolve South unrest

BANGKOK: -- THE government is determined to solve the unrest in the deep South from all dimensions, including the Malaysia-facilitated peace talks with separatist groups, Colonel Banphot Phunphian, spokesperson for the Internal Security Operations Command (Isoc), said yesterday.

He made this comment in response to a six-minute YouTube clip by Adul-karim Kalib, the self-described top member of Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), who accused the Thai state of hypocrisy in solving the South conflict and vowed to fight on for independence.

Banphot said the identity of the makers of this "propaganda-like" clip was still unclear, adding that it appears to be aimed at instigating operatives and sympathisers to create violence in the region. However, authorities believe the clip may have been created by those who hold different views from the peace dialogue.

He also urged such groups to refrain from violence and to join the peace dialogue via their representatives.

He said earlier unofficial dialogues with leading members of various groups in the region had progressed and were in line with the wishes of most people, who reject violence and support the peace dialogue. He said peace talks were ongoing and this period was to create trust. The recent revelation of those willing to take part in the talks and their decision to accept joint benefits could be seen as a good sign or even a turning point for the deep South, he said.

We'll knock me down and call me Susan. The government spokesman has found that the BRN is guilty of spreading propaganda, something that our beloved Junta has never considered.

Actually the BRN statement is quite interesting in that it lists the reasons for having no faith in this current government, including its repressive nature. Not entirely sure this matters given more democratic regimes have been equally cack handed.

I don't think any Thai government can really contemplate the Southern provinces as not being part of a unitary state.

How will they do that. ban a religion? There is more chance of a fair and free election soon than resolving the unrest in the south. I really believe now that unrests like this can only be solved with division. Look at Serbia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Northern Ireland. Multi culturism does not work. Just ask the Irish, Scots and even Welsh. it doesn't work.

Well, they've been "determined" for thirty years.

They annexed the Muslim area, exactly as Myanmar did, and with the exact same result, being chaos and death.

Since then, they tried to shove Buddhism down their Muslim throats, killed people (remember the little boy last year?) and then they declare they are "determined".

The only thing they seem determined to do is prolong the conflict, maintain a huge military presence, and reap ill-gotten gains forever....

Contrary to Thaksin's insistence along with the Thai military that the Southern Malay-Thais must remain subservient to the Buddhist Kingdom of Thailand, Yingluck offered in 2013 autonomy similar to the peace agreement with muslim insurgents in the Philippines in January 2014. To make this offer Yingluck had to bypass the Thai military in peace talks. Looks like the military did a little payback against Yingluck as a consequence.

Autonomy for areas within a State has been a viable solution for ethnic, religious and cultural conflict.

The Philippines government accepted an autonomous Muslim-dominated region, handing much of the responsibility for security there to local authorities as well as a large share of revenues from the region’s wealth of natural resources. The Crimean Autonomous Republic (before its conquest by Russia) may have also influenced Yingluck's approach.

Prayut has stated shortly after assuming PM that he will never concede any Thai soverneignty to Malay-Thais.
