Bangkok hit with floods

BANGKOK: -- Various spots of the eastern Bangkok had been submerged prompting Royal Irrigation Department chief to urged officials to keep drain into the Bang Pakong River and the Gulf of Thailand.

Samart Chokkanapitak said Thursday that although some areas would suffer blockage floods, the newly opened Suvarnabhumi Airport would not be affected. Following the airport's opening, the department would soon excavate 17 canals in the eastern Bangkok to increase its water-draining ability.

Samart also insisted the high sea tides and the northern floodwater passing through Chao Phraya River at 2,423 cubic metres per second would not submerge Bangkok. "The only factor that can cause flooding is heavy rainfall," he said.

Bangkok's Srinakharin, Pattanakarn and Ramkhamhaeng roads were kneedeep in water after Wednesday night's heavy downpours.

Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin, who yesterday morning inspected the routes said officials worked had hard to drain floodwaters out of the areas and the situation should be back to normal by late afternoon Friday.

Consider yourself lucky. Drive down Srinakarin towards Pattanakarn. Make a left on Pattanakarn and turn left at the first soi on the left. You won't have to go far before it is time to un-hitch your boat.

BKK Governor is confident that water in Chao Phraya will not raid into nearby areas

Mr. Apirak Kosayodhin (อภิรักษ์ โกษะโยธิน), the Bangkok Governor, is confident that the water in Chao Phraya River will not surge into nearby areas although the Royal Irrigation Department has already released 3,112 cubic meters of water, and it is expected to reach Bangkok within two days.

Mr. Apirak insisted that Bangkok will not be hit by flood even though the department considers that the amount of water is exceeding the capital’s capability in holding floodwater. He informed that the water level in the Chao Phraya is still low, and the sea level is not high. However, the sea level will rise again on October 9th to 11th.

According to the recent inspection, Mr. Apirak said that the current water level in the river is at 1.65 meter, but it will rise to three meters after the water released by the Royal Irrigation Department reaches Bangkok. He said that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is prepared for the possible flood situation. He said sandbags have been added and permanent three-meter barriers have been constructed along the riverbanks.

The Bangkok Governor will determine the flood preventive measures this afternoon, and he will then report the situation to Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont at the BMA City Hall.
