Vietnam requests Thailand not to use force against fishermen

Vietnam has demanded that Thailand promptly investigate the deadly shootings of Vietnamese fishermen by a Thai marine police ship last month, strictly punish those involved, and undertake not to use force against local fishers, Tuoi Tre News reported.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesman Le Hai Binh said this at a regular press conference in Hanoi on Thursday in reply to reporters’ questions on the shootings that left one fishermen dead and two others injured.

Vietnam has also asked the Thai government to offer an apology to the victims, compensate for the human and property losses of the Vietnamese fishermen, and promise not to let such violence recur, he said.

After being kept informed of the incident, the ministry asked the Vietnamese embassy in Thailand to clarify the issue and sent a diplomatic note to the Thai embassy in Hanoi to protest the shootings, the spokesman added.

The Vietnamese embassy also held a meeting with the Thai Foreign Ministry to express its objection, Binh said.

The Thai prime minister then ordered an urgent investigation into the incident, the spokesperson added.

The fatal shootings occurred on September 11, when six local fishing boats were stopped by coast guard officers on board the ship Thai Police 528 while they were fishing off the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang.

Naah...the Thais should provide the Viet fishermen armed escort back into their waters plus a handsome financial bonus...

Why does the Viet coastal patrol not stop and arrest their own people to stop future infringement?

thats simply a friendly warning from Vietnam...

and you will notice also, that Vietnam have more balls, and honor than U.K. (dixit David Cameron & the Koh Tao case murder)....

Why was the Thai coast guard patrolling off Kien Giang? If the Vietnamese boat was fishing in the Thai part of the Gulf, the reporter ought to have had the gumption to make that clear. Still, sounds like a serious incident that Thailand is trying to play down.

Whoa.. Let's back up here. For you FNGs lets do some recap. In the past 30 years VN has just started to emerge from it's autocratic militant based Communist mentality. During that period up until recently VN and it's various military arms were none to nice to anyone that even strayed into their waters, let alone got caught fishing in them. The Thais have been the brunt of this for many years resulting in numerous deaths, incarcerations (usually out of all proportion to the crime I might add) and vessel seizures.

Now with VN having become more economically successful and aggressive it is their vessels "straying" into other's waters. Turn about is fair play in SE Asia.

Now do not misunderstand I do not in any way condone such actions as shooting fishermen down,(unless they fire on you first, of course) but this matter should be kept in perspective with the not too distant past history among the participants.

There was another thread recently on this topic which had a link to an article about Thailand turned a blind eye to many years of Thai fishermen pirating refugees fleeing from Vietnam. It reported that there had been a huge number of murders, rapes, kidnappings, human slavery incidents, and more during that time where refugees were trying to flee. Have you included that in your historical accounting?

It doesn't seem at all logical to say it's ok for somebody to shoot someone else who is out fishing because of historical wrongs. It's not "fair play".

It would be unwise of the Thais to shirtfront the Vietnamese in any shape or form. If the Vietnamese can knock over the Americans and the French the Thais would be a pushover. For starters the Vietnamese have 4 Russian built subs versus v Thailand nil. It is claimed the Vietnamese were fishing off the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang which is nowhere near Thailand. If this is true then there is something very fishy going on and I think the smell is originating in Thailand. What was the Thai coast guard doing down there. Surely not smuggling anything you like to name. In my humble opinion Thailand is becoming increasingly lawless in just about every respect both on land and sea. I share my time equally in both countries and there is no question which is the safest country to live in. But sometimes I am prepared to risk my safety to enjoy the better aspects of Thailand.

Easy fixed.

Take fisherman on board Navy vessel and look after them decently and return them MINUS fishing vessels and catch back to Vietnam. No need for shooting fishermen. If they refuse to leave their vessel then sink the vessel (and provide methods to rescue fishermen).

Now what is so hard about that? Jeez why shoot everybody? coffee1.gif

This is from one of the original reports " Police said a Thai officer was aboard a Vietnamese trawler that was stranded with engine trouble before the other Vietnamese boats arrived in support in the incident 40 km off the southernmost Thai province of Narathiwat, near Malaysia.

"We had no intention of killing anyone. We fired only warning shots, from 100 metres away. We only shot at the front of the boat," he told Reuters by phone.

"The Vietnamese fishing boat came into Thai waters illegally, police had to arrest them."

It also seems that under similar circumstances a Thai Marine police officer went missing, and still hasn't been returned!

Thai claim they were surrounded by a gang of nearby vietcong vessels and had to shoot...

Anyone in a Man City shirt is fair game IMO!

It's really funny how these guys in SEA wear these team shirts with no idea what they're about. One of the Bali bombers (the one who was laughing all the time) showed up for sentencing wearing a Nevada State jersey.

On the other hand I've seen tourists come to Brazil and pick up a teams's jersey because it looked cool, and at some point they get roughed up by fans of an opposing team, and have no idea what they let themselves in for.

It looks like the Junta is preparing for the ASEAN Community by being the Big Fish of the Seas.

As Prayut has said, nations must fear us to be our friends.

Humility is not in Prayut's name.

People talk a lot about the Chinese claiming the whole coast as their territory, but the gulf of Thailand has more than ten overlapping claims. The issue is murky at best, not cut and dry at all. It seems the ASEAN family (Peah Vehar Temple to point) has not settled even border disputes, and are launching some great initiative. And they agreed on English, but the Thais are saying other countries want to learn Thai!

Horse hockey and bull feathers.

This is the reason thailand needs subs... Fishermen stealing all the fish... Kill them and sneak out undetected.

[/Read the story. The Vietnamese fishing vessel was reported as being in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang. That is no where near Thailand. It is near the Cambodia Vietnam border. So what are the Thai Coast Guard boys doing way down there south of Thai waters. Wouldn't have been doing a bit of people smuggling by any chance and were witnessed doing so by the fishermen. Tried to scare the Vietnamese away by throwing a few bullets at them.
