English Muffins

Featured Replies

I've never seen them in Thailand.

I used to like them with about half a pound of that cheese in a jar soaked into them.

Damn you all!!

For a year or more I have avoided crumpets, muffins and other fattening foods.

But after this thread I went out at the start of the weekend and bought some crumpets. I have eaten 24 in three days! Used up all my butter too.

Moderation is the key, HB. 24 in three days may not be moderate, but it is moderately moderate. You should be just fine. laugh.png I, too, tend to avoid the fattening side of crumpets. Which is why I prefer slim crumpets containing zero fat and also requiring zero moderation. The German crumpet shown below very much appears to be fat-free. Yet I must admit that I would regrettably have to pass on this one on account of the fact that it needs to be washed down with a copiuos amount of Bier.

I would instead rather heavily lean on towards this petite Russian crumpet instead. There is nothing fattening around the midsection that I am able to discern. The area of the crumpet immediately below the midsection exudes health to such a degree as to convince me that it was capable of giving life.

Another quite welcome alternative would be the exquisitely shaped Argentinian variety of crumpets. Of course, topped with your favourite fruit.

I would strongly recommend avoiding American style crumpets. There was a time past when they were quite salubrious and delectable; and even considered to be some of the best crumpets in the world. But, alas, it seems that there has been a recent unwholesome change in the recipe. The older variety using the original recipe can still be found, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to get your hands on them. I must mention, too, that as of late they have extremely poor shelf life.

Which crumpet varieties would other posters like to trumpet?

Cheers and bon appetit,

Tip

I bet that last bit of crumpet makes a lovely pot of tea Tipp!

How blessedly fortunate I am to drink coffee! laugh.png

Very informative thread regarding exchange of cultures, someone should alert the Nobel committee.

I was never sure what a crumpet is. I learned what "bit of crumpet" means from movies and hanging around with you Brit pervs. wink.png

At the time I was growing up, in NYC, we still had a lot neighborhood bakeries owned by Germans, and there must have been 20 different breakfast type things that we all knew by name, though I can hardly remember any now, except for one they called "Mae West." Never heard of a scone until I left the country, and I thought maybe it was another name for crumpet. Scones arrived in the US along with up-market coffee shops (like Starbucks), but by then an Aussie girlfriend showed me how to make them.

For a while, when I heard "English muffin" I'd think of Kate Winslet's backside. Alas, it is no longer with us. I'm not the only mourning this loss.
