Floating lanterns forbidden in 5 districts of Chiang Mai



CHIANG MAI, 5 November 2015 (NNT) - The Governor of Chiang Mai province has warned residents in five districts against releasing floating lanterns, which pose both a fire hazard and aviation risk.

According to Chiang Mai Governor Pawin Chamniprasart, warnings were recently issued under a law that came out this year to prevent dangers from fire-related activities.

Floating lanterns are forbidden, except on Loy Kratong Day on November 25 and New Year’s Eve, to maintain holiday festivities. Legal penalties will be enforced in five districts, including Mueang district and certain areas of Hang Dong, San Sai, Mae Rim, Rim Tai and Saraphi districts.

People in other areas of the province are able to set off floating lanterns, provided that they notify the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand and Chiang Mai International Airport at least seven days in advance.

Floating lanterns can be released during the day from 10:00 - 12:00 hrs and at night after 21:00 hrs. They must not be taller than 140cm or wider than 90cm in diameter. Each lantern's fuel supply must not weigh more than 55g or burn longer than eight minutes. Retailers are also prohibited from selling the floating lanterns in public places.

I'm sure this very same story was on TVF last week, but this is from 31 minutes ago as of posting this. Even though i have noticed it again, 1000's of people won't and neither will they pay any attention to it.

We've already heard this, and we all know that the ban will be universally ignored.

If the authorities are hell-bent on enforcing something, try enforcing traffic laws.
