Officials yesterday (Nov 11) marked out the 10 percent zones at beaches within the Karon sub-district.

PHUKET: -- As officials yesterday (Nov 11) mapped out the 10 per cent zone for the new “Phuket Beach Model” for beaches in the Karon sub-district, Phuket Vice Governor Chokdee Armornwat once again reiterated that all umbrellas must be placed within the 10 per cent zone.

Karon sub district consist of six beaches, and yesterday officials surveyed and marked out the 10% zone designated for umbrellas and beach mats on each of those beaches.

At a meeting held at Karon Municipality office before the marking out took place, V/Gov Chokdee announced, “Karon Beach has five 10% zones each 70 metres wide,. Kata Beach has two 70 metre 10% zones, Kata Noi two 40 metre 10% zones and Karon Noi one 40 metre 10% zone.

“90% of these beaches are for the public to enjoy, but no umbrellas or mats are allowed in that area.

“Freedom Beach and Nui Beach are to be free of umbrellas and beach mats therefore no 10% zones have been marked out there.”

"90% of these beaches are for the public to enjoy..."

Wrong! As long as the parasail and jet ski operators are allowed free reign over the beaches, far from 90% is available for the public to enjoy. The parasail operators in particular make it clear in no uncertain terms that the public is not welcome to swim or sit on the sand in "their" runway areas.

90% of the beach is to be enjoyed? That's probably right as the 10% zone, will be full with literally hundreds of tourists crammed together like sardines fighting for a space along with the permitted vendors. Who's going to enjoy that?

Excuse me. The old system had them crammed in like sardines.

The greedy beach people want it ALL and set up thousands of EMPTY chairs to protect THEIR turf.

If they only set up an umbrella when someone requests one, there should be plenty of room.

I feel dizzy with all these conflicting news reports about where tourists can set up their own mats and brollies. One authority says tourists can only set in the 10% zone, next day someone else say they can set up their own gear anywhere, day after the initial guy (to save face) says yes they can set up anywhere but we will encourage them to only use the 10% zone.

Seems to me they are scaring the very few tourists away from the beaches. Talk about shooting themselves in the foot ....

I clicked on this story hoping for pictures of Phuket beach models in bikinis - then I realised my error!

Why do Phuket officials always think they can rewrite the laws. The national law that seems to apply everywhere except Phuket states there shall be no commerce on public beaches. Nothing about 10% zones. None of the surrounding provinces allow jet skis at all, let alone take over large areas of the "public" beaches. Planet Phuket!

"Why do Phuket officials always think they can rewrite the laws." - that's because Phuket is not in Thailand. smile.png

"The national law that seems to apply everywhere except Phuket states there shall be no commerce on public beaches." - yes, but once again, Phuket is not in Thailand. smile.png

"None of the surrounding provinces allow jet skis at all, let alone take over large areas of the "public" beaches." - yes, but they are in Thailand, this is Phuket. smile.png

"Planet Phuket" - otherwise known as "The Democratic People's Republic of Phuket."

No "TIT" (This Is Thailand) on Phuket.

It's "TIP" - This is Phuket. biggrin.png

Strange thing is, it's the same military. cheesy.gif

Wait until a "Phuket Beach Bouncer" kicks the <deleted> out of a tourist who brings his / her own chair and brella. smile.png

Only a matter of time.

Lets be honest.

The beach chair vendors were given an inch and they took a mile. They cover the beach in empty chairs every morning and were literally forcing tourists under threats and intimidation to buy their services.

SCREW THEM!
