BANGKOK: -- As the New Year is just a few weeks aways, the prime minister has advised heads of government departments to prepare gifts for the public.

At the same time, the prime minister also instructed that government agencies team up with a number of companies from the private sector to lower prices on many goods and products as a New Year gifts to the Thai people.

This was revealed by Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha when he officially opened the ‘Tay Jai, Kuen Sook Tessakarn Pi Mai’ or ‘Overflowing Hearts and Happiness for the New Year’ Fair which will be held from December 17 – 27.

The fair is a cooperative effort between the government and a number of leading consumer goods producers to provide the public with cheap goods during the New Year celebrations.

As much as 80% discounts are being given on many products in accordance with the government’s campaign to provide happiness to the public by lowering the cost of living especially during the festivities to herald the New Year.

Accordingly, the government has also launched the ‘Talad Tong Chom’ or ‘Must Visit Markets’ campaign nationwide which highlights local markets and the lifestyles of peoples in various districts.

The Ministry of Commerce has been tasked with the responsibility of handling the campaign and has plans to develop 231 similar markets all over the country by 2018.

The ‘Tay Jai, Kuen Sook Tessakarn Pi Mai’ fair is expected to provide discounted goods to the public worth approximately 50 billion baht and will allow at least 30% in savings in costs of living for the general public.

It is estimated that people can save the money up to 15 billion Baht from this campaign.

Prime Minister Prayut said the government has prepared many other gifts as special New Year gifts for the public.

Similarly, the Ministry of Justice has also prepared many New Year gifts for the public.

But gifts from the ministry come in the form of increase fairness and equality in society under 4 major topics such as a move towards higher technology in dealing with judiciary matters, according to Justice Minister Gen Phaiboon Khumchaya.

For example, he said, increased usage of ‘Apps’ in appeals or damage claims and follow-ups on cases for the general public are 2 of the 6 new technologies that will be employed.

Others include higher access for the public and inmates to receive justice under the ‘Ruenjam Jaeng’ or ‘Open Prison’ and rehabilitation of former convicts so that they may return into society as productive citizens.

Finally, greater emphasis in tackling corruption and graft in major government projects both at the provincial and national levels, said Gen Phaiboon.

Where's the vomit emoticon?

Ah...here sick.gifsick.gif

" As the New Year is just a few weeks aways, the prime minister has advised heads of government departments to prepare gifts for the public."

Use any reason to placate the public. Even if it's not their traditional holiday. Since they are stealing our holiday for their benefit, maybe the should repay us by granting more reasonable long term visas like Cambodia and Vietnam. Oh...I forgot the holiday they are stealing is New Years, not April Fools Day.

govt prepares vague but sweeping populist gesture.

Could no be called "populist policies", I assume?coffee1.gif

Because that is a thing of the past, right?!

It's a good thing that there are no elections planned, else this might be interpreted as vote buying.

Let's just call it a one-off "Popularity Investment".

we ain't any different, our bullshit is just as funny but a lot more depressing. example COP21.

Is that why diesel dipped below 22 B/liter ?

I need a list of all the -30 to -80 % items !

if they really want to make folks happy scrap the silly licencing hours, reduce tax on booze and legalise gambling, and prostitution of course

I'm guessing the ‘Overflowing Hearts and Happiness for the New Year’ won't extend to alcohol.

Last year when the world oil price dropped wasn't that presented at their ' gift ' to the public ?

I can think of a suitable present but it would constitute Lese PM.

Government to give New Year’s gifts to the people

.........just how much happiness can the masses accept???

The people only want one gift Mr. P.

They would like to have their freedoms back.

So he's advocating that the government, which has helped itself to your money through taxation, now spend your said taxes on buying you a Christmas gift? And the second little nugget is that he is proposing that shops lower their prices on certain items (let's call this a "Sale" for arguments sake) around the Christmas and New Year period. I believe that retailers in some other countries may have already stumbled across that piece of marketing genius.

"Populist????" That is sooooo 2005. Like Enoon, I prefer "Popularity investment." That makes it completely different.

No need, already available with the exception lowering the tax on booze.

Freedom of speech? Free elections? Free justice and liberty to all? No, 50% off carrots, tomatoes and peas at your local market. Hooray for the government!

after he gets told to do with his thai ID card, he comes up with this. lets see what happens

Would not the greatest Christmas gift for the Thai people would be for the Army and the Police to migrate to Cambodia taking all the Politicians with them ?

if they really want to make folks happy scrap the silly licencing hours, reduce tax on booze and legalise gambling, and prostitution of course

No need, already available with the exception lowering the tax on booze.

So , What makes you think that this would be good for Thailand ? Are you from or have lived in a country that has experienced this ? Or are you just thinking like an emptied headed alcoholic with no thought of the reason for licencing hours and other laws?

my guess is that we won't find the 1997 constitution under the Christmas tree with this group of monkeys.... coffee1.gif

cheesy.gif right.....you can't accuse him of that cheesy.gif

Im still using all the Gillette Sensor Excel blades I bought last year for 80% off. Bought three years worth...........4 blades with the razor for 109b........bought all they had.

Governments have nothing to "give" except what they steal from others.

Money = happiness.

Surely not the official line?

Any consideration on how this might affect the economy?
