How to Find a Decent Nanny in Chiang Mai?

Anyone have any experience with this? We live in CM and need a capable live-in nanny with some English skills, but aren't sure where to look. Tried once on the TV classifieds but didn't get any responses that looked promising.

Via the Burmese Christian churches, best source for dedicated, serious caretakers. Just walk in on a Sunday around lunch time and talk with someone, eg. the church right behind the former(?) Wat Gate pumpstation. Another one is the road passing the trainstation out of the city, halfway between inner and second ring road a small old pumpstation on the left hand side, after few metres a soi on the same side, after about 50 meter on the left side, elevated church building, if I remember well from the Burmese Lisu community. Don't waste your time on Thais they always make problems.

Thanks!

Would I find anyone in those churches that speaks English or should I bring a Thai speaker?

Taking a complete stranger into the home to help care for your children is dumb. Unless the person comes highly recommended or is someone you know, then I wouldn`t even consider it.

How much are you willing to pay per month? Think you'll find that's the determining factor in success. How many children to care for?

We hope that B12k/mo plus room/board in a nice house, plus free English lessons in effect, would be enough for the care of a well behaved 2-yr old boy.

I second that. If you don't know them, why would you give your children to them?

I think you'll find there are plenty of willing candidates on those terms. You might want to throw in some housekeeping duties as well. However, you will probably have to be patient with respect to English language ability.

There is a noticeboard at the Rimping Supermarket near the Nawarat Bridge where you can advertise. I've seen similar ads for housekeepers etc. there before. Good luck.

Rob at Sausage King has used many Burmese for jobs around his place. He recommended one guy to me and I got an excellent refurbishment of my studio/condo for a cheap price, job well done.

Rob's wife has contact with the Burmese community and the ones I have met have been good honest reliable people.

Way too much. Going price of a Burmese Nanny is 8K a month with room and board for them. I know several people here with them any that is all they pay and most have had there Nannies of over 5 years. Problem with Farang we over pay. I know Thai girls with degrees that only get paid 15k a month for a decent job.

Again, the churches here are one of the best places to pick up a Nanny from and you can advertise on the Church Notice boards and directly to the pastors. Most my friends got their Nannies from a Church group (either Thai or Burmese) near Kad Farang.

So you don't think the OP will be able to conduct a job interview? Or check out the qualifications of an applicant? The negativity of some posters on TV is becoming depressingly familiar.coffee1.gif

Perhaps, if someone was cleaning your house or taking care of your yard. However, allowing them to take your child is a different situation. For example, how reliable would police, psychological or medical background checks be . . . I would prefer personal knowledge of the person I allowed to take care of my child, but then I love my child.

If the nanny is live-in, it's not too much as you are paying for a double shift each day.

Most my friends with a Nanny pay between 7-9000 a month.

These girls get free board (nice room), free food (and I am told they will eat 3-4 times a day) and if they are good, they are treated much like the family and get a lot of extra benefits. For a good Nanny here, someone with little or no education, it is good work. It is a lot better then being paid 90 baht a day (which our locals are paid) to cut rice for a day.

Most my friends that do have Nannies give the girls after a probation period of 3-4 months, such things as decent mobile phones, etc, etc, etc. It is much like getting a cleaner here. We have a girl we pay 300 baht for once a week to work for a full 8 hours with a meal. Our gardener is the same 300 baht a day with added extras of lunch and half a bottle of Lao Khao at the end of the day. A friends girlfriend works 4 hours every night washing dishes for 80 baht.

It is all relative to what they get.

Total nonsense, all the people here are no 'strangers' but all part of their church networks. And compared to Thais they do know their responsibilities, are well motivated to build up a life here and are extremely loyal. Keep your cynical bullshit.

Thanks again for all the info.

Still trying to find a nanny though!

If you know of someone who is interested or who definitely wants to help a friend get the job, please ask them to reply to the ad I put on the classifieds here or message me privately here on TV. I'm hesitant to approach people (like some listed above) who are merely potential intermediaries and aren't aware of this forum discussion.

My wife and I would pay the going local rate for a non-English speaker, a bit more for a good English speaker, with a raise (in either case) after a couple of months if all's well. Also a couple of afternoons (~11-5) off per week.

Thanks again to the responders for all the info.

Unfortunately, one week on, we have had exactly zero responses from prospective nannies who are willing to start in the very near future.

We've given flyers to local pastors and posted them on church bulletin boards. We've spread the word among all Thai and farang friends/acquaintances. We've even contacted third parties that were helpfully suggested by posters above. All to no avail.

I think it's fair to say at this point that it is difficult to find a nanny in Chiang Mai, particularly at short notice.

We really do need a nanny, though, so we're now forced to think about leaving--to a less wealthy, urbanized part of Thailand or possibly out of the country entirely.

Further thoughts, in case anyone else comes across this forum topic:

Women who are capable and willing to work as long-term, live-in nannies are relatively scarce in Chiang Mai. I'm sure they're findable, but probably mostly via people who know you (and can vouch for you) in communities where such women live/work.

Filipina (and other English-speaking) nannies are much in demand and probably too expensive and choosy--always looking for a better deal somewhere. Unless the prospective English-speaking nanny were connected via family or friend networks I wouldn't even consider hiring her.

Advertising online (e.g., here on Thaivisa) is probably useless, unless you're prepared to pay >B15,000/mo--because women who are internet-savvy enough to see and respond to your ad will be the types who are looking to make big bucks off of dumb farangs. Arguably advertising online is worse than useless--even when posting an ad is free--to the extent that overpriced or "my situation is complicated" candidates waste your time.

Paid-subscription nanny sites are almost certainly worse than useless unless you really are prepared to pay up--and watch out for scam-like practices that induce you to register "free" and then tell you that some great-looking "candidate" (i.e., a bogus one) would love to hear from you; but of course you can't contact her unless you pay (through the nose) for a subscription.

I'd say there's an opportunity here for someone who's willing to set up a real, honest housekeeper/nanny staffing company for CM (gathering candidates through personal contacts not by soliciting for them online). We would have been willing to pay at least a couple thousand baht as a finder's fee for a good and reasonably priced nanny.

Most things just do not happen fast here and finding a maid in a week would be exceptional let alone a nanny which is orders of magnitude more difficult.

Expectations often need readjusting here.

I was thinking the same thing..

Angie's list for domestic help.

I would call star visa company, they speak English and are related to the lady I recommended.. They might know someone else, a young girl who would be accountable to her elders.

Jus' thinking.. Good luck!
