Chiang Mai bus crash: Four from same family among fatalities

BATU PAHAT: -- A family of six were among the victims of the Chiang Mai bus crash incident, four of whom died including an 85-year-old, the oldest member of the tour group.

Low Chee Lan was on holiday in Chiang Mai with her second son Tan Yang Soon, 64, and as her youngest daughter Tan Sui Heng’s family when their chartered bus crashed into another vehicle before hitting a power pole and plunging into a ravine on Sunday.

Yang Soon survived the incident but his eldest daughter Tan Thin Thin, 39, was not as lucky.

His sister Sui Heng and her husband Ker Boon Kwang, 57, were among the deceased but their daughter Ker Shin Hui, 28, escaped with injuries.

Yang Soon’s brother-in-law Lim Poh Teot said that the former’s two sons had left for Chiang Mai early Monday morning after learning of the incident on Sunday evening.

"We are all in shock. My sister (Yang Soon’s wife) especially is very emotional now.

"Her two sons are expected to arrive Thailand tonight, so we are waiting for updates from them," he told reporters when met here on Monday.

Meanwhile, Chiu Travel Agency general manager Terence Yung said all 22 Malaysian victims would be receiving insurance compensation amounting to RM100,000 per person.

He said that the company is currently liaising with the insurance company to helped out the victims as well as their next-of-kin.

"Before they went to Chiang Mai on Dec 17, they already took travel insurance as it is important as well as a norm for our travel company.

"What we do have right now is that 10 people are injured including a traveller in a coma," he added.

CHANG MAI -- The families of the 14 people killed when their coach crashed in Chiang Mai’s Doi Saket district on Sunday

Twelve others, including the 58-year-old Thai bus driver Somporn Bualuang, were also injured in the crash.

The victims' relatives were scheduled to collect their remains Monday at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital.

Chiang Mai Governor Pavin Chamniprasart said Monday that a coordinating centre had been set up at the hospital to assist the injured and families of the deceased, overseen by the Chiang Mai Disaster and Mitigation Office in collaboration with related agencies. Insurance authorities have already informed Pavin that the family of each deceased victim would receive Bt1.6 million in compensation from two insurance companies.

The medical bills of injured victims will be covered up to Bt50,000 in accordance with the Insurance Act. If expenses exceed that amount, an automobile insurance policy would pay up to Bt300,000 per injured victim while the tour operators' insurance policy required by the Tourism and Guide Registration Act would cover up to Bt500,000.

The driver must be charged with 14 counts of manslaughter. Doubtless, he'll walk, though.

So very sad to hear of peoples holidays and lifes cut short while on holidays in this beautifuL country.RIP

No amount of money can replace a human life. Surviving family members suffer their entire lives.

The driver needs to be charged with MURDER and sentenced to death.

There were 5 members of the same family from Malaysia that were killed as a result of the terrorist bombing at Erawan shrine but that was not allowed to be reported. At least not in Thailand.
