Looking for a good value Chinese smartphone in Pattaya?

My 15-year old step-son is crazy about playing games on his smartphone. I'm not over the moon about this, but as his mother says, at least he stays home and doesn't go out drinking and taking drugs with friends and killing himself on a motorcycle.

His current phone is almost kaput, and hardly works, and he is pressuring us to buy him a new one for his birthday next week.

My circumstances are somewhat straightened and I cannot afford anything fancy, so was wondering if anyone could recommend a cheap Chinese brand that would probably satisfy him.

It's just games, YouTube, and chatting with friends on Line. He uses my wifi at home, and never takes the phone outside. I really don't want to spend more than 5,000 Baht.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Nothing in stores will match this Wiko with 1gb ram and 8gb rom, sold online by Lazada...delivery will take a week. Easy to deal with. You can pay at 7-11 rather than use credit card.

If you are willing to spend B5000 for a great phone and he can wait a couple of weeks, this Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 with 2gb ram/16rom is a very well reviewed and excellent phone. I have purchased items from Everbuying in the past and they are reputable.

This HOMTOM is also a great value for the money.http://www.everbuying.net/product1117354.html

Also you check out these ASUS phones on Lazada...excellent phones, prices much lower than retail stores.

Thanks for all the links.

I like the Wiko Lenny 2 for 2,490. The boy is asking for a Samsung J7 but that is 8K - a big difference. I'm sure the Wiko will do everything he wants.

I have been using Elephone for over a year without an issue. My 2 sons have them as well. They are state of the art and priced very well. You can get 4Gig ram and Android 6.0 in a 5.5" phone.

$179 delivered and no customs charges. Check it out.

If he is into games, 1Gig of ram will not cut it. He will be very disappointed.

You might also consider a tablet, which is much better than a smaller phone for playing games. Samsung makes a nice 7" tablet for less than 5,000 Baht that also has a sim card slot to use as a phone and an micro SD card slot to increase storage. I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3v, and it suits my needs just fine. Lots of other manufacturers make tablets in your price range as well.

As others have suggested, a tablet may suit his needs a bit better. TECLAST tablets have been mentioned favorably on this forum several times. They have a number of models in various sizes and configurations including one that operates on both Android and Windows systems. Available from Lazada, Gearbest and Dealsmachine among others. I found the increase in viewing area between a 7" tablet and 8" inch to be very noticeable.

Unfortunately, kids are just as brand brainwashed as many adults on this forum and they all want either Samsung or Apple.

Just keep in mind, if you buy a cheap Chinese phone, in 3-6 months you'll probably will have to buy another one.

Buy Korean or Taiwan.

Don't go no name Chinese garbage. Usually the battery drains in a few hours. Just look up Craigslist, there is a ton of name brand stuff, used and cheap as people In the loop upgrade every year

That's a unfounded, preconceived notion. Even I-phones are made in China. Brands such as Xiaomi, One-Plus, Lenovo and Huawei are now world leaders and proving every bit as durable and reliable as any other.

Go to the Samsung Service center someday and look at the line out the door of people needing repairs on their Korean devices. I had an Asus (Taiwan) phone...good phone actually but Asus service sucked and refused to honor a warranty.

You want to continue to believe that by paying three plus times as much for a device buys you quality and dependability, go right ahead but I maintain what you really are paying for is advertising and promotion and other products that are loosing money.

Lazada far from cheap. Don't forget the shipping charge.

I've checked, shipping is free, provided you don't live way out in the sticks, which I don't, and even then it's only a couple of hundred baht max. Lazada prices are extremely competitive, and flicking through their pages they always have some stuff on special offer which is really good value.

One of the phones recommended was a Wiko Lenny 2, which is made in China for a French company.

I have Googled reviews of this phone and they are all 100% positive and compare favourably with brands at double the price or more.

The phone is sold widely throughout Europe, but strangely not in the UK. Maybe that's anti-French bias, or maybe the Brits are too snooty to buy something so cheap.smile.png

Certainly when my and the wife's Samsungs finally bite the dust I will be going for something like Wiko or another Chinese brand.

The days are gone when you just get fake iPhones and Sumsungs from China. They are building up their own name brands, and both Apple and Samsung have admitted it will hit their sales in China as more people realise you no longer have to pay 500 - 600 dollars for a decent smartphone.

Most "Action" games will play OK as long as he makes sure that no apps are running in the background and regularly cleans out junk files using something like "CLEANMASTER" I do agree that high level games with 3D graphics would not run as well on 1 gb ram.

I decided to go for the Wiko Lenny 2 for 2,490 Baht which was delivered with free shipping yesterday morning along with a 16GB micro SD card for 180 Baht.

My step son is absolutely delighted with it, and he knows about clean master to keep it free of junk.

Thank you for all the recommendations and suggestions - it is much appreciated and I've learned a lot.

The Umi Rome looks good at first sight but a few weaknesses when you dig into the specs.

Battery: 2500 mAh, That's low for pushing a 5.5" 720p display and an octa core processor.

The Mali 400 processor is OK but it's 3 year old technology and not that battery efficient, even though they claim it is.

FDD LTE is listed as 800, 1800 & 2600. Doesn't Thailand use 2100?

I agree that The Umi is the lowest priced phone available with 3gb RAM and it looks pretty good

Here we go... 8 months later and the  Wiko Lenny 2 that I bought for 2500 Baht from Lazada is now kaput.

He played games on it non-stop for 8 months, so I'm not blaming the phone. My guess is that if I had paid three times that, it would still be kaput after almost 24/7 games use. (they never sleep).

I am open for suggestions, including a cheap tablet.

Any ideas anyone?
