New Bar in Ubon Ratchathani

Hi Guys,

I'm a bit of a newbie in Ubon, but I must let you in on a complete Gem of a bar. I was driving around Huang Wang Wong - or whatever it's called - to the north - east of the city, and happen to stumble acorss some Faranag drinking out side by the lake. We, my family and I, ventured inside to be greeted by a very affable chap by the name of Lance, his wife Tom, and some helpers, I think Bob and Jeff were their names.

Anyhow, the kids loved the Fish and Chips, my wife loved the Leb-Tao with fish sauce, and I loved the Pie Mash and Liquer.

An unmissablle venue, and we all wish we weren't having to leave so soon

Apparently Dtai Oratai is singing there next Friday .... NaChaLuai's own Princess.

Thank you Lance, Tom, Phibun Mike, Yorkshire Bob, Colin, Barry,"Floppy Knob" Bob, Jeff and a very nice ship's captain by the name of Chris.

Went out with a Nok Noi (seang Issan) dancer once who had toured with her for 7 years. I asked her where she thought the nicest place was in Thailand and her opinion was Ubon, she was not from there. Having been once about 12 years ago I think she was probably right. Trying to get the mrs to agree a visit again as her mate has a bar there. Tai Orathai is a great singer but not unfortunately a great entertainer, can't connect very well with an audience, pity.

Im sorry "jacky" but I have to disagree with you somewhat here. The great Isaan singers such as Siriporn Ampaypong, Dtai Oratai, Monsit Kramsoi, "Mike" Pilonporn, Chintala Poolarb (please excuse all the previous phonetics!!) rely on a huge stage show to back them up with them and their voices doing the important work, (unless you're Lesley Duncan .. a brilliant songwriter .. but terrible "stage fright".)

I, personally, find the whole Isaan show bizarre as you may be listening to a few, good, soulful songs sung by the subjects and a fabulous array of dancers and routine behind, when all of a sudden the whole thing breaks for the comic sketch with sporadic drum rolls. Also when the subjects are singing you find the MC wandering around the stage as though he were a Bank Manager.

I, of course, am in the minority and am a visitor and love hearing the dulcet tones of the aforementioned artistes.

Most singers actually don't have huge stage shows any longer, Jin gave hers up in 2007 and Siriporn in 2011, Mike and Monsit never had a tour show. They still of course appear all the time in concert varying from no dancers and backing tape to a full blown events with a band and dancers. This is all largely irrelevant to my point which was not all great singers are good entertainers, and some lesser talents are far better entertainers in concert appearances. Just to take one top line artist Janet Keaw, hardly a great singer but she outshines anyone when it comes to getting a crowd going and lifting the mood. Unfortunately Tai is just the opposite, much as I appreciate her voice. There are singers who are the life and soul of the party on stage and shy and withdraw off it, it's what they do on stage that counts.

Tai used to enter the talent show at the crocodile farm in Samut Prakan where she worked every Sunday, never won, never won any contest as far as I know apart from one as a youngster in Ubon, she won a bike. Most great singers who enter contests as youngsters have cupboards full of cups. She got into Grammy after meeting Khun Sala Chunawutt the great Grammy song writer.

Seen all of the singers you mention, and all the others over and over and most are good entertainers, especially Monsit, Ying Yong, Jin especially Ecachai Shivachai he is brilliant on stage. Great singers are not just judged on their voice, but the mood they can create and how they react with fans and 'acting' out the lyrics as well. If you watch a talent show with luktung morlam singers you will see that they are not just judged on their voice alone. Tai is just shy on and off stage and that's unfortunate in an artist of her stature. She is a wonderful singer but limited as an entertainer, in my opinion having seen her quite often over the years.

Her best style that suited her was slow luktung, when they took her down the morlam road she was not quite as good at that and never looked very comfortable dancing.

Two of Ubons best singers, well it was Ubon when they were born. Job and Joy now singing for sangravee entertainment. This is from 2002 I think.

Superb, informative post Jacky .. many thanks - even though I don't fully agree on the "live performance"attributes making a star great or not! I saw Dtai on a few occasions and the place erupted (and tears flowed) when she broke into "Oh Baan Nawg" and "Gin Kao Ler Yang", BUT I must agree with you on Dtai's discomfort singing and dancing Mowlam; as you said she should have stuck with Luktung

Anyhow, thanks for the heads-up on Job & Joy .. never realised they were Ubon lasses - outstanding voices

Their village is in Amnat Charoen now, but still Ubon girls!. This is their latest album released last year by Sangravee entertainment, a rather up market outfit owned by a real estate business woman, a patron of the arts.

Ubons greatest singer of course is Banyyen Raggan, think she's 63 now and a true expert on Morlam styles, she can dance better with one hand than most can with their whole body. I heard they sent Tai to her for dance lessons, not sure it's true though. Banyyen can put you in a trance!

That I can, she is huge around those parts. When ever a taxi driver in Bangkok asks me where I am from I tell them Ubon, followed by Baan Dtai Orathai (she 'lives' 200m down the road from me) and suddenly I am their new best friend.

I was last in the village a month ago and it was sad to see her childhood home (Grandma still lives there and she visits often) has been destroyed by termites. She is rebuilding though.

Exactly Memock, I've had the same from all the male-mtaxi drivers out of Bangers, as soon as I mention Warin and that "Sao Warin ror Rak" then that's it .... I'm their mate for life.

Works for me too. Never any problems with a driver from Isaan; talk about music and I tell them Dtai is my number one, but I can't claim her as a neighbour!

I have had had Dawk Yah Nai Bpa Bpun as my ringtone for many years; still gets a surprised look from locals on occasions, when they see an ancient fat farang answering it.

"Long time listener, first time caller" here on ThaiVisa. Bear with me if I don't get this right because I'm no tech guy!

I can confirm the original poster's thoughts about TC. I have been there a few times at the old location, and twice at the new Lakeside location. Good food, cold beer, and great location and atmosphere with a view out over the lake. There seems to usually be a few friendly regulars around in the evenings.

Katareya2006, are you going to spam-post every thread on ThaiVisa? Come on mate, give it a rest. I’m sure many people are tired of seeing your advertisements popping up on other legitimate threads. Just let your bar speak for itself. If it’s a place people like, then it will get legitimate posts and buzz like TC got here, and you won’t have to be your bars #1 fan on TV or write your own fake reviews in TripAdvisor, as was exposed in another thread a few days ago.

The funny part about this post of yours is that you are spamming a thread about your own supplier! TC provides the best falang item on your menu, the meat pies. Unfortunately, you charge more for them, they are not as fresh as the ones at TC because they are kept in the freezer, and TC has a lovely lake view from a garden, and ME has a loud motorway view from a car port, but at least you have some okay pies on offer now!

Maybe it would be better for your bar to let the missus take over marketing from now on?
