Thousands of carps swim upstream for spawning in Nan province

CHIANG MAI: -- Residents of Nan province and tourists alike flocked to a creek in Tambon Phu Fah in Bor Klua district on Wednesday to watch thousands of carps (Cyprinidae) or pla peek daeng swimming and struggling upstream for spawning.

They used their smartphones to take pictures of the carp fish in the shallow Nam Mang stream in Ban Sob Mang.

Dr Tuan Uppachak who operates a salt-making factory in the district that said that the appearance of thousands of carps was an annual phenomenon which happens only a few days in March every year. He said the fish swim upstream to spawn and then return downstream but there are others which die after spawning.

However, he pointed out that the number of carps this year was less than the previous years blaming on the dredging of the creek which has ruined the ecology and habitat of the fish.

To protect the fish, village heads and kamnans in Bor Klua district have banned catching the fish during the spawning season and violators will face a fine of between 500-1,000 baht for each fish caught.

My apologies for being utterly, ridiculously Pedant, but CARP is Singular and Plural - just like FISH or DEER.

I'm not Carping, nor Harping, Just sayin'

On another note - Thais eat their fair share of fishes.
