Checkpoint police nab 21 taxi drivers, most for poor dress sense

PHUKET: Police have arrested a total of 21 taxi drives at a checkpoint in Patong in the past two days, 19 of whom were fined for being inappropriately dressed.

Patong traffic policeman Ekkarat Plaiduang and Tourist Police Chief Urumporn Koondejsumrit led the checkpoint in front of the Patong Police Station in order to crack down on fixed-price taxi services and ensure that green-plate taxi drivers were dressing appropriately.

“We have been setting up checkpoints randomly, following the policy of Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha and the national police to crack down on taxi drivers who take advantage of tourists and give the country a bad image,” said Maj Urumporn.

Taking advantage of tourists by dressing badly ?

Well I suppose if motor show pretties have to dress properly it's the least taxi drivers can do.

And who is going to crack down on the Police who give the country a "bad image". whistling.gif

My hamster just died laughing on its wheel when reading that to my wife.. Cremation in an hour. RIP, dear mate.

Thailand's police continuing to be a national embarrassment....

Time for this joke organization to be dismantled from top to bottom and rebuilt by someone with at least one braincell if one can be found in Thailand's hierarchy.

My deepest condolences for your loss.

...take advantage of tourists and give the country a bad image

Some organisations still can't cope with competition.

Maybe the police should be arrested for wearing uniforms that are too tight and boots that are too sexy.

Only 'some' there are not any that can stand competition

I think tight uniform with high brown leather boots and a silly hat is top of the list for poor dress sense !

Rather have taxi man or woman that puts meter on and knows where they are going - they can be wearing anything don't care

Nice to know the BIB are enforcing fashion guidelines. The Nanny-State has arrived, just in a different form: Nanny-State, Thailand Style. <cue Psy>

What fashion laws were broken?

What is the legal dress code.

Are Hello Kitty T shirts allowed?

these taxi drivers are our front line into the country and it is important that tourists are treated well from the beginning they need to get off to a good start to their holidays.

Last year I got a taxi from Don Muang and the whole cab was completely done out in Hello Kitty stuff. They also had fake eyelashes on the front headlights.

Ironically, it has always seemed to me that meter cabs offer a better and safer option to the freelancers in minibus cabs, and the like, and yet, they are getting targeted in this absolute joke of a way.... Unless the cabbies were naked, of course, which would explain it.... Although it would be interesting to hear the cabbies explanation for said nakedness.

Think you're wrong there. From the op it was aimed at fixed price taxi's and green plated taxi's, meter taxi's are neither of those.

Oops... Assumptions right... Not a good idea to jump too.

My mind was fixed on the attached picture, showing a metered cab, but indeed, your correct about the OP.

However, that said, and for Schmitts and giggles, if you read the OP link, it says 19 of 21 drivers were done for poor fashion sense, whilst the other 2 offences were metered cabs that hadn't turned their meters on

"Are our frontline into the country"

Are you Thai?

" were dressing appropriately."

I like this. Must have had underwear on I guess.

Hello Kitty from those nudist Japanese- are you nuts? Smart casual would be Swastika and Hitler Tee's.

You mean after being ripped off, double priced, robbed, injured in a bus accident, forced to undergo a urine test in public, or beaten up by a katoey they will forgive and forget because they surly enjoy the ride to the airport on their way home, with a cabbie in a white shirt and tie?

Dress sense? That takes priority over doing their job properly? Hell, half of the Thai male population (and a few female), not to mention a number of the foreign populous, have dubious dress sense.
