MOPH to build road safety checkpoints in all communities

SARABURI, 13 April 2016 (NNT) - Director-General of the Disease Control Department Amnuay Gajeena has visited Saraburi province to observe the road safety campaign.

Dr. Amnuay went to Nongkhae district to inspect a service area jointly operated by security officials, volunteer rescue workers and vocational students. During the visit, he spoke of the department’s plan to build a road safety checkpoint in all communities to prevent and reduce traffic accidents.

Statistics over the past five years shows that 1,900 people were killed and more than 130,000 were injured during the Songkran holidays. On average, each day of the festival saw 57 deaths and 3,845 injured in road accidents, or twice the number of casualties during non-holiday periods. Most of the victims and wrongdoers were teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19.

Dr. Amnuay disclosed that the checkpoints would be consist of security officials to deal with drunk drivers. ‘Sober Up’ centers will also be set up to help prevent and lower the risks posed by drunk motorists.

I think all these so called safety initiatives anr simply a way to raise funding to be skimmed off.......committees overseeing committees, advertising contracts and all manner of stupid decisions made and all needing funds....with almost zero positives reached.....the government continues to show that they are a failure!

And we still don't see:

- Much more education, preferably on TV at prime times (newspaper education a total waste of time, the number of Thais who now actually read a printed newspaper is tiny, like all other countries) to explain traffic laws and rules and explain why the rules exist, and to show hideous accident photos / videos, emergency rooms, etc.

- Professional well proven continuous police work to catch maniac drivers / catch more drunk drivers / to catch vast numbers of law breakers.

IMHO until we see the above nothing will change.

Why on earth is the Director-General of the Disease Control Department involved in road safety at all?!? blink.png

Wait, so against all available statistics, they're saying that a little over 10,000 die every year?? Is this a lie? Or it just a 'numbers' problem? whistling.gif

Most of the victims and wrongdoers were teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19.

Wait, what? You're blaming the kids now? facepalm.gif

I drove from Phuket to Nakhon ST 3 days ago and passed at least 20 police check points where half the road was barricaded with witches cones. Only 2 had any police but were sitting talking and all were just traffick hazzards, most almost causing accidents due to 2 lanes plus all the motorbikes trying to merge with no warning.

The rest had no police presence nor a person in sight.

You people really need to open your eyes.

The vast majority of what you think are check point are actually places put in place for drivers to stop, stretch their legs, have a cup of tea/coffee to try and reduce the effects of fatigued driving. They aren't manned by police but by local village volunteers.

if so Then why are they blocking a road .makes no sense just adding to the mess!

So Mr P

Why not just FOLLOW the laws already in place.. ie. a working incorruptible honest police force, proper driving education ,it save cash on extra check points....... although may not help your mates GRAFT income

what a load of CRAP, will it include tail lights working on all Motorbikes? helmets on all bikes? 2 people only on a bike, staying on the right side of the centre line when cornering, overtaking cars quickly not like a tortoise in 5th gear, bikes stopping at all junctions and giving way to other vehicles on the main road, driving too close/too fast on the wrong side of the road, abolishing those dumb ass U turns on fast roads, correct use of acceleration and brakes as they only seem to know stop go no "cruise" witness the brake lights of the car in front as he repeatedly accelerates and brakes rather than hold a steady speed behind the car in front of him, keeping left on 2 lane roads, not overloading your pick up, the list is endless.....it aint gonna happen is it!
