Looks like the bakery opposite Holland Tulip has closed.

Called in there today but they have a sign in the window thanking their loyal customers, but no longer will be open for business. Shame, I quite liked a lot of their products, the banana cake, muffins, quiches etc. The Holland Tulip hasn't got the same things unfortunately.

Are you talking about that one at the crossroads on SCC road, next to the lights?. (I didn't realise it had a name).

I've been using it for a couple of years and I was confronted by the same sign just a couple of weeks ago Shame really, it was a good shop. I shall miss it and I had no indication from the manageress that they were due to close.

Anyway, there is another shop opposite and I went over there. They had a sign they would be closed for 7 days over Songkran. All of a sudden, two bakers shops and both unavailable.

It's one of the irritating things about Thailand. Shops open and you start to use them and, suddenly, they are not there anymore. Same with the picture framing shop on SCC road.

I suppose it's caused by short term leasing or something.

Yes, the place opposite is called the Holland Tulip, which has been there for a few years, and the one that's closed operated for at least two years. As I said, the Holland Tulip doesn't sell the same things, no quiches, muffins or banana bread for a start.

The lady who "managed" the business was in fact the owner and a lovely lady she was too.

Their wholemeal bread at 30 Baht a loaf was not only the best wholemeal bread in the area including all of the darkside (IMO) but it was also the cheapest

I understand that she had an option to purchase the property when her lease was up for renewal and she must have been confident that she would be able to buy the property because a few months ago she updated and modernised the business which must have cost a pretty penny.

The "owner" at the end of the lease may well have demanded an amount of money that was over the amount that may have been previously agreed, I place an emphasis on the "May well have"

I agree with all you say. She was a very charming lady and I had my bread and other stuff from that shop for 2 years.

Was a regular there too for their quiches which were baked daily and great. Miss them but that whole area will be a mess until they finish (if ever) the road works for new drainage and many shops may be affected,

Yes, hiking the rent when a landlord sees a profitable business is not unknown. They especially try it on when leases fall due and many a decent and successful (and savvy) business decide it aint worth it. My favorite noodle shop on Lengkee was a good example, Always clean, always busy and always delicious, they shuttered overnight, then the place lay dormant for half a year. Since then, it's seen a succession of hole-in-the-wall travel shops and the odd boutique open and fail.

Those road works!. Today I wanted to go to the ex-pats shop further up from the bakery. Could easily have given up given the traffic diversion off the road. Parked up and walked back. Looks like they are doing a big job on pipes around that area. Must be a headache for shop owners.

Imagine what the shops on Thappraya road had to suffer for 5 years.

I didn't think the place was that special and their ice cream was very expensive. That being the case, I suspect it was a lack of trade rather than a tent increase that caused the shop to shutter. It was never vwery busy and it's hard to see how one makes a living selling a few loaves of bread and rolls a day.

Speaking of closures, the very pleasant restaurant at the Holland Tulip Resort has also closed. That is the real loss in the neighborhood. The food and atmosphere was very nice but prices were higher than the typical 100 baht specials customary in the area. That's probably what did them in.

Or maybe the property owner suddenly became greedy and wanted an unrealistic rent

I think I was saying the same only between then lines Lol

Now that IS a surprise. That place was always busy from when it opened at 7AM and all the way through to lunch and usually all their breadstuffs were sold out by mid/late afternoon. That's why they had 4 waitstaff + the owners wife on most busy mornings. Weekends would easily see all tables full, inside and out. Don't see how their prices affected their trade as it usually was family or group dining and not the frugal sorts looking for Lek Hotel style buffets. How about their bakery? That was a big moneymaker IMHO and the source of my sliced loaf and croissants.

NanLaew, I believe you misunderstood, Tulip Bakery's still open. The restaurant in the resort (@traffic lights turn right) is the one that closed I think.

The +100TB dishes may indeed have partially "did them in" but I think that "no have this" and "that mod laew also" and "this gamlang pai buy at the talaat" also wasn't making them a winner.

For the small little bakery across Tulip Bakery: a true pity, nice folks and good stuff for a very fine price.

OK, thanks for the clarification. I never dined inside at the resort so seems like it died a natural death. I reckon places that are not directly on the road or even slightly off the beaten path need to have something exceptional to maintain trade.

Nice flame attempt though ?

And I don't buy your "off the beaten path" theory either. Two successful restaurants that have been around for years in the area, Tocino and Swiss Paradise, are very "off" and do very well. The Holland Resort even had a captive market of the resorts guests to draw on, a very pleasant garden environment and still couldn't make a go of it. Pricing was on par with Tocino too...just too bad it closed and a dining loss to the area.

That would be so unusual for Thailand. thumbsup.gif

I had to re-read my post to see where any perceived flame was writ. Unless you are of the Lek Hotel buffet browsing set which you obviously aren't, it's hard to see any attempt to flame anyone. But I digress.

You mentioned Tocino and Swiss Paradise and I agree they are way off the visible radar and exactly the sort of places I was referring to. However, I would consider that they do offer something exceptional in food, service and ambiance but how do they compare in that regard to the recently closed Tulip Restaurant? I ask since I never dined at the latter but have at the other two but you may have eaten at all three? I am not asking to challenge or disagree with any of your claims (apart from the flame jibe) but maybe their captive market were more inclined to venture to other venues after a few days if what another poster suggests was a lack of choices and possibly less than average quality with some dishes?

The interest is because Mrs NL has recently ventured into the restaurant trade and is going gangbusters so it is interesting to have a heads-up on what works, what doesn't and also the impact of the chosen location if she decides to get too adventurous.

Thanks!

Hello, any update o holland tulipe  ? I see on tripadvisor that restaurant Yvette has closed ? Not related to the bakery that closed ?

And where are Tocino and Swiss Paradise ?

AFAIK, the Tulip Bakery and Restaurant on Soi Siam Country Club is open but their restaurant inside the separate but co-owned Tulip Resort off the back of Soi Phonprapha Nimit 22 is closed.

Type either Ticino Restaurant Pattaya or Swiss Paradise Restaurant Pattaya into google and maps will follow.

Your statement about tripadvisor is so funny.

If you can Google it, why did you need to ask?

Swiss paradise was supposed to be in the same area as the other ones. This is why I asked.

Make sure you are googling the right Swiss Paradise. The name isn't copyrighted and there's probably more than the two I know.

I went there and could not find it. Tulip bakery seem to be only good as a bakery, but the food is totally useless.

I found a better restaurant just near, selling Vietnamese food as Nem nuan and noodles, but it's on the dark side at Non prue intersection.

All dishes are very nice and sold maximum 100 thb. They also have steak and Thai food, but best of all, they grow their hydro vegetables on the spot. People that we can really call nice and not ridiculous like the supposed vietnamese restaurant on central pattaya.

I like vietnamese food and healthy salads in a very nice place, and sold at a very low price, so I am sure to go again.
