Hi everyone,

I need to buy a car for my wife as she is pregnant with our third child, it's becoming hazardous on our motorbike.

We found a car dealer next to our house, there is a toyota pick up hilux vigo E D-4D 2.5l / 2010 / 66 000 km for 480 000 bahts.

I can put 200 000 on the table and the dealer finds a bank or private agency to give us a credit but they will just take how my wife is making money.

I would like to know how to check that the documentation are legit, should we go with a bank representative to the Department of Land Transportation office or simply call the department and give the number on the lem tabian (car registration card) to verify that her name is registered?

The car dealer only told us that the finance will provide a temporary lem tabian with her name and the finance name and then give the one with only her name once the payment is completed. How to make sure that it's not just a fake piece of paper?

Call the dealership who sold the car in the first place and try to verify the odometer reading, they can do that because the write down when the car was in for service..Also check the service book,if not available be very careful!

If you're really paranoid, deal with big names. Like Tisco or Thanachart for the car finance. They will check if the book is legit or not and will be the one who will send a photocopy of the book for your wife to keep to prove ownership.

Thanks for your answers, after some research I wonder if second hand car can be a good deal in Thailand, regarding the safety there is toyota sure but it seems overpriced.

I'm leaning more towards getting a new car.

Maybe I will open another topic to know what people think about new or used car.

I went to Toyota and Honda, Toyota for a pick up but for an automatic it's minimum 900 000 or Honda for the new BR-V at 750 000, a good compromise between truck and car. I'm living in countryside so the ground clearance can play in my choice.

The maintenance of the pick-up could be costly also.

Any good advice?

Buying new is the sensible option.

If you think the BR-V is a possibility also take a look at the CX-3 or Ecosport. Maybe even an XV but they might be a bit over your budget.

The CX-3 is nice but a bit over my budget, I should stay around 600 000 and can push up to 750 000. Can you bargain the price for a new car in Thailand?

I'm very concerned by the safety as well, I guess the bigger the better so the pick-up is very tempting.

You can not usually bargain over price but you can bargain for freebees. Do some research on the car or truck you want to buy and see all the options that are available. Like all weather mats, bed liner, car cover, etc. When I bought my new Mazda 3 I did not get anything off the sticker price but did get a lot of freebees. Here is what I got for free, 1st years first class insurance, window tint, car cover, cargo mat, window rain deflectors, all weather floor mats and door sill covers.

For 480,000 you can nearly buy a new car. Crazy to buy second hand.

480'k a new car? What kind of car? Maybe a squeeze ecobox, but noting decent.

For that kind of money, i prefer a nice comfortable larger used car.

We passed the finance, we will get our car tomorrow evening, Toyota Hilux revo double cab prerunner 2.4 E AT. 855 000 baths

Posted

At the last moment Toyota informed us that the finance refused. Which alternative would be best?

For the same price we found these:

- Isuzu D-max X series hi lander 4 doors AT 863000

- Ford ranger 2.2 XLT AT 869000

which one would be best and anyone knows other choices?

Also my wife told me that for the finance to come we need to book the car, 5000 bahts, are all dealers asking this?

You probably get more toys in the Isuzu but the Ford may have more air bags. You need to check.

I bought my Ranger because it is the safest one available here, but I don't know the exact specs of the XLT. The Ford is a better ride, too.

Thanks for the info, why the ford is the safest one?

Does 2.2L mean less power than the revo?

Posted

No. Outside of America we are able to make smaller engines with more power that use less fuel. All manufacturers have websites with all the info you seek.

My Ranger (Wildtrak) is safer because it has 6 airbags and electronic stability control gubbins - what the XLT has I don't know. You could've found out by now if you'd visited Ford's website.

Thanks, I'm looking at the second hand again, the wildtrak is way above my budget for the new model, but for the second hand it's tempting, between 600 000 and 750 000 for 2013/14 models.

I already visited the ford website, and compare all models with carbay but looking for some tips or info here too.
