not much good news for you, isnt?! 3rd successive pre-season loss!

Frank Lampard's goal could not prevent an almost full-strength Chelsea from slipping to a 2-1 pre-season friendly defeat away to Hamburg.

Lampard put the Blues ahead in the 24th minute, tapping Michael Essien's unselfish square pass into an empty net, but Mladen Petric capitalised on a mistake by Yury Zhirkov, on at left-back for Ashley Cole, to beat Ross Turnbull with 18 minutes to go.

Worse was to come for the Premier League champions as youngster (18 yrs.!) Heung Min Son won it for Hamburg with three minutes to go, inflicting Chelsea's third successive loss of the summer following defeats to Ajax and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Carlo Ancelotti named a strong side for the game in Germany, with John Terry, Branislav Ivanovic, John Obi Mikel, Nicolas Anelka, Salomon Kalou and Florent Malouda all also featuring from the start, while Didier Drogba played the second half, his first pre-season outing following hernia surgery.

Haha yeah I know, I can't work that one out either, why get an older player to replace one of the countries most skillful players? something was up with JC though as the last 3 managers never let him play 90 mins and nor did Capello during the World Cup!

But yeah, i do agree that somethig is up or wrong with Cole.

There simply must be as if everything was ok, he'd get much, much more playing time for Club & Country.

he can't take direction. all his managers seem to have said the same thing, including mourinho, ancelotti and capello. he's told to do specific things, to release the ball at certain times, to not lose it stupidly in dangerous areas, and he's never really learned.

i think benayoun's a better, more consistent player.

Brazilian striker Neymar close to signing for Chelsea

Chelsea are closing in on the signing of the exciting Brazilian striker Neymar for between £20 million and £25 million.

Exciting: Neymar is seen as one of the top talents in world football and has not gone unnoticed across Europe Photo: AP The Premier League champions’ chief scout, Michael Emenalo — who has emerged as an increasingly important figure in identifying transfer targets in recent months — was in New Jersey to watch the 18 year-old star for his country in their 2-0 victory over the United States.

Emanelo was accompanied by agent Pini Zahavi who has been brokering a deal with Neymar’s club Santos who turned down an offer from Chelsea for the player earlier this summer — thought to be around £17 million — and insisted that they would only agree to the transfer if his buy-out clause of £29.6 million was triggered.

Chelsea will still not bid that high for Neymar but there is a growing sense from those close to the negotiations that because the club are now willing to bid closer to that figure they can finally secure the deal.

Neymar was also linked with a move to West Ham United, who had a £12 million bid rejected, but the club has backed off because of Chelsea’s interest.

Despite his undoubted talent — he scored against the US and there was a strong lobby for his inclusion in the World Cup squad as he overshadowed Robinho in the run-up to the tournament — there is a concern as to whether he will be able to deal with the physical demands of the Premier League.

However, Chelsea have been tracking Neymar for two years and are keen to add him to their squad along with another Brazilian, Ramires, who also played for his country at the Meadowlands Stadium earlier this week, and whose £18 million move from Benfica should be completed by Friday.

The midfielder has already agreed personal terms and undergone a medical and is due to arrive in London on Thursday for the paperwork to be completed. His arrival will put severe pressure on John Obi Mikel’s first-team place especially as Michael Essien has returned to fitness.

A third Brazilian also remains a target for Chelsea who have long held an interest in the highly-rated defender David Luiz. The 23-year-old was also in the Brazil squad selected by the country’s new coach, Mano Menezes, and is available for around £30 million. That fee, although high, is not believed to be prohibitive to Chelsea although there is a reluctance at Benfica to sell Luiz, who has also been the subject of a bid from Manchester City, this summer.

If Chelsea acquire Neymar it will be a strong statement from owner Roman Abramovich that the club remain in the market for the world’s best young talent. During the World Cup Abramovich let it be known that he was strongly interested in signing Fernando Torres, and was given encouragement from the Spain striker’s camp that he may want to move on, before the player eventually committed himself to Liverpool following the appointment of new manager Roy Hodgson.

So far this summer Chelsea have only completed the signing of Yossi Benayoun, from Liverpool, for under £6 million but there has been a clear-out of older players — and youngster Scott Sinclair — as manager Carlo Ancelotti creates more room within his squad. A move for Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic has been rebuffed.

Joe Cole and Michael Ballack — two high earners were released — while two more of the club’s better-paid players, Deco and Ricardo Carvalho, have also since departed with the latter’s move to Real Madrid close to being completed. Chelsea also released Juliano Belletti while sources believe Ashley Cole’s future is still to be fully resolved despite the club’s insistence that he is not leaving.

Chelsea have registered an interest in the Werder Bremen midfielder Mesut Ozil — as have Manchester United — but he is not thought to be a priority right now.

Carvalho has Madrid medical

Ricardo Carvalho is all set to complete his move to Real Madrid after undergoing a medical.

The Portuguese centre-half flew into the Spanish capital overnight and was put through a rigorous physical examination on Thursday morning.

He is now poised to finalise his switch to the Primera Liga giants, who saw a bid for the defender accepted by Chelsea earlier in the week.

It is believed that Real will part with around £6.7million in order to bring the 32-year-old to Santiago Bernabeu.

The move will reunite Carvalho with Jose Mourinho, who he has previously worked under at Porto and Chelsea.

He will become Real's fifth signing of the summer, following in the footsteps of Sami Khedira, Pedro Leon, Angel di Maria and Serigo Canales.

A statement on the club's official website read: "Ricardo Carvalho, fifth summer signing for the new season, is now in Madrid.

"The Portuguese centre-back arrived at 0200 this morning (Thursday) at the Mirasierra Suites hotel, where he spent the night.

"Seven hours later the player arrived at Hospital Sanitas La Moraleja where he is now undergoing a medical. After, at 1300, he will take part in a press conference in the press room at the Santiago Bernabeu."

Chelsea 6 - 0 West Brom

Didier Drogba notched a hat-trick as Chelsea signalled their intent to defend their Premier League title by thrashing newly-promoted West Brom.

Florent Malouda struck early on from six yards before Drogba scored with a free-kick on the stroke of half-time.

Drogba later pounced after a goal-line clearance and scored with a deflected strike from the edge of the area.

Frank Lampard finished an attractive move, while Malouda struck from close range on the stroke of full-time.

Chelsea, who ended last season with an 8-0 thrashing of Wigan, have now won the opening day for the last nine seasons.

And they move instantly to the top of the table after the biggest opening day victory in the history of the Premier League.

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti saw his champions play with a confidence, skill and composure that seemingly enabled them to slice open their opponents at will.

It was a chastening afternoon for West Brom and their manager Roberto di Matteo, a former Chelsea player who received a generous reception from the Stamford Bridge crowd.

His team enjoyed phases of play during which the Baggies displayed the sort of smooth passing football that helped them to win promotion from the Championship.

And Di Matteo can take solace in the fact that they will not play such a talented side as Chelsea every week, but the hammering nonetheless provided an instant illustration of the sort of quality that his team will encounter in the top flight.

Indeed, it was a far from complete performance by Chelsea, who at times seemed to be going through the motions before suddenly raising the tempo.

If the home side needed an early goal to dust off the cobwebs of their sluggish pre-season form then it arrived when Malouda scored after just six minutes - but only after some shoddy goalkeeping from Scott Carson.

At the very least, the West Brom keeper should have diverted a Drogba free-kick away from goal but he spilled the ball into his six-yard box and, after he partially atoned for his error by smothering an effort from Jon Mikel Obi, France international Malouda had a simple tap-in.

The Baggies seemed content to pack the midfield and leave Roman Bednar as the lone - and frequently isolated - striker, while Chelsea illuminated the contest at a sodden Stamford Bridge with some delightful passing.

Ashley Cole looked more like a left winger than a left-back, while Lampard pulled off one particularly audacious backheel that would have played Malouda through had he been more alert.

Malouda should later have scored Chelsea's second but headed over after Carson had acted sharply to palm clear a vicious Lampard free-kick.

Carson had been unhappy with his wall - and he must have been infuriated with it in first-half stoppage time when Chris Brunt and Gabriel Tamas allowed Drogba's free-kick to fly between them, with the Ivorian's long-range strike finding the net after bouncing yards in front of the keeper.

Drogba's strike took the match beyond West Brom, who had played some decent passing football after conceding an early goal.

Di Matteo's team often let themselves down with some poor decision making and execution in the final third but their approach play was at times crisp and precise.

A low strike from the influential Graham Dorrans took a slight deflection off John Terry and forced a sharp save off Petr Cech, who returned to the Chelsea side after recovering from a calf injury.

And Bednar had the ball in the net with a 20-yard strike but his effort was ruled out for offside.

West Brom continued to catch the eye with some attractive football in the second half but within 10 minutes of the restart Chelsea had extinguished any faint hope of a Baggies comeback.

Chelsea looked threatening at set pieces and it was from a corner that Ancelotti's team scored their third.

Youssuf Mulumbu made a goal-line clearance after Terry had headed goalwards but the midfielder could not prevent Drogba from smashing home from six yards with a left-foot strike.

Nicolas Anelka and Cole combined to play in Lampard, who struck the fourth from 12 yards.

Drogba completed his hat-trick after 68 minutes, with his strike from a wide angle taking a sizeable deflection off the unlucky Tamas.

It seemed inevitable that Chelsea would score again, but the sell-out crowd had to wait until the final minute for Malouda to collect a pass from Anelka before eluding Carson and shooting into the net off the post.

West Brom might have scored a consolation but Alex managed to deflect a strike from Chris Brunt over his crossbar, while substitute Simon Cox shot wide.

Wigan 0 - 6 Chelsea

Defending champions Chelsea notched another six goals to beat Wigan and fire a warning to their title rivals.

The Blues slipped up at the DW Stadium last season but - fresh from their 6-0 opening day thrashing of West Brom - Carlo Ancelotti's side made no mistake this time and condemned the sorry Latics to their second successive heavy home reverse following their 4-0 loss to Blackpool.

Florent Malouda opened the scoring in the 34th minute after Chris Kirkland parried Frank Lampard's shot, with the Frenchman slotting home from close range.

Compatriot Nikolas Anelka then got a quick-fire brace (48, 52) soon after the restart to make sure of the points, before Salomon Kalou notched his own brace inside the last 12 minutes and substitute Yossi Benayoun completed the rout with his first goal for the Blues.

The victory sees Chelsea open up a two-point gap in the early table, while Roberto Martinez'sside slumped to the foot of the top-flight on goal difference after their worst-ever start to a Premier League campaign.

The Blues have now scored a phenomenal 29 goals in just five league games, 14 of those against Wigan as they thumped eight past them on the final day of last season.

As for Martinez's hapless side, they have conceded 25 goals in six league matches and 10 already this campaign.

The 4-0 home humiliation to Blackpool last weekend had prompted bookmakers into offering staggering odds of 15-1 on a home win, arguably forgetting the Latics had ended Chelsea's six-match winning start to last season with a 3-1 victory.

Certainly for the opening half hour Wigan's performance, in contrast to a week ago, was as different as night and day.

There was energy, effort and endeavour, and most crucially a lack of errors that was the main reason behind their embarrassing downfall against the Seasiders.

Striker Hugo Rodallega epitomised the difference as he was willing to chase balls out to the left wing, and when required he also tracked back to play his part in defence.

Rodallega also put Petr Cech under pressure, although in fairness a 35-yard free-kick and 22-yard drive were meat and drink for a man of the Chelsea goalkeeper's calibre.

But for that initial 30 minutes Chelsea were kept quiet by Wigan's industry, with their only notable effort not really one to write home about as John Obi Mikel skied a 25-yard effort high over the crossbar.

However, the Blues are not champions for nothing and in the 34th minute they underlined why, stepping up a gear for the goal that broke the deadlock.

It was simple, incisive stuff as Didier Drogba and Ashley Cole combined down the left to tee up Lampard for a close-range prod that was brilliantly tipped away by captain Kirkland.

But from the rebound, Malouda's reaction was too quick for Maynor Figueroa as he ran to tap home from a yard out.

Wigan's high work rate kept them in the game until the half-time break during which Martinez would undoubtedly have urged his side to keep it tight after the restart, whilst at least try and press for the equaliser.

But within the space of just over six minutes, such words will have counted for nothing as Wigan found themselves 3-0 down, and with the game over as a contest.

Two minutes and 29 seconds into the second half Chelsea had doubled their lead courtesy of a crisp, clinical strike from Anelka.

Collecting a raking ball from Mikel down the right, Anelka's cause was aided by Figueroa, Antolin Alcaraz and Kirkland pausing for a brief moment as the Frenchman strode into the area.

The trio gave Anelka just enough time to steady himself before he unleashed a low right-foot shot beyond Kirkland inside his right-hand post.

Fewer than four minutes later, Chelsea were heading back to London with all three points as Anelka scored his second.

After chasing a long ball down the left, Malouda chipped in a cross to the far post where Drogba turned the ball back across goal for Anelka to nod home from three yards.

To their credit, Wigan refused to roll over, arguably playing some of their best football of the game, albeit all in vain.

Yet Rodallega and the returning Charles N'Zogbia, absent last week after Martinez had questioned his attitude, were denied by brave blocks by Chelsea captain John Terry and Alex respectively.

James McCarthy then saw a deflected effort hit the right-hand post, with Mauro Boselli flagged offside after tapping home the rebound.

Chelsea, though, were not done and after being on the pitch eight minutes after replacing Malouda, Kalou made it four in the 78th minute.

After Mohamed Diame was taken off on a stretcher, Chelsea then rubbed further salt into Wigan's wounds with Kalou making it 5-0 in the 90th minute and another sub in Benayoun adding the sixth in stoppage-time as the Blues' free-scoring antics made it their best-ever start to a top-flight campaign.

Ancelotti lauds leader Terry

Carlo Ancelotti has hailed John Terry as the man most responsible for driving Chelsea towards greatness.

The Blues celebrated a memorable League and Cup double last season, their first under the guidance of Ancelotti.

The Italian has rightly been praised for the fine work he has overseen at Stamford Bridge, especially as things have not always gone as smoothly as he would have liked.

His talismanic skipper fell under the microscope at times last term, with revelations about his private life and the subsequent decision to strip him of the England captaincy firing Chelseainto the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Ancelotti, though, insists Terry has never allowed his focus to waver and admits he is full of admiration for the way in which the combative centre-half demands universal respect within the dressing room.

"John Terry is the captain of all team captains, he was born with the captain's armband on his arm," Ancelotti writes in his new autobiography: The Beautiful Games of an Ordinary Genius.

"Even without the band, it's as if he wears it anyway, and that's how it ought to be. He's different from all the others, Chelsea is his home, it always has been, ever since the youth squad.

"One word from him, and the locker room holds its breath. He's the first one to sit down at meals, the first one to stand up.

"Being part of this club is his mission, that's how he was made. He pays close attention to the performances of the youth team, he keeps up, he knows all the scores, he misses nothing (although he often loses at ping-pong in the dining room - and when that happens, watch out).

"He works twice as hard as everyone else, he has the sense of responsibility of someone who runs a company, a people, a philosophy that above all has to win.

"There is no room for second place; there can only be room for us."

Malouda calls for credit

Florent Malouda believes Chelsea deserve more credit for their attacking style of football.

The defending champions have started the new season in superb fashion with 12 goals in their opening two wins against West Brom and Wigan.

Chelsea set a new Premier League record of 103 goals last season and Malouda is miffed as to why Carlo Ancelotti's men are not regarded as entertaining as Arsenal or Manchester United.

Malouda believes that Chelsea's play has stepped up to a whole new level and that they have demonstrated the quality they possess already this season.

"It is difficult to know why people still seem to think Arsenal and United play the best football," said Malouda.

"Even when we finished on top of Arsenal, people said they played better than us.

"If you want to win the league, you have to be efficient, but when you look at how many goals we are scoring, you surely have to recognise there is real quality about us.

"The manager has worked at making sure we control games and you are seeing an evolution in our play. We are keeping more clean sheets but also scoring a lot more goals.

"It is not enough for us now just to go 1-0 up. We have developed a killer instinct and want to finish teams off. There are goals throughout this team and if there is an opportunity to kill a game off, we take it.

"We'll never go easy on teams and it is great for confidence to know just about everyone in the squad is capable of scoring goals."

Blues to play in Bangkok summer 2011

Chelsea Football Club's first-team squad will be visiting Asia during next summer's pre-season preparations.

Chief executive Ron Gourlay announced today in Bangkok, Thailand, that the team will be playing a match in the city against a Thailand All Stars side.

The news means the Blues will be returning to Asia where two years ago we played games in China and Malaysia.

The last time we played in Thailand was 1997 when Ruud Gullit took a side that had recently won the FA Cup to play the national team and won 1-0.

Since then support for the club in south-east Asia has grown rapidly generating around 350,000 monthly visitors to our official website chelseafc.com and today's announcement continues involvement with Thailand that was strengthened with this month's signing of Singha Beer as our official beer sponsor.

The venue for next summer's match will be the 60,000-capacity Rajamangala National Stadium (pictured below) with news on the date and ticket sales to follow.

'By announcing this part of our summer tour schedule so far in advance, we have a year to engage with our increasing fan base in Thailand as we build towards the game. We are looking forward to bringing the club closer to the fans with a year of activities including our world-renowned community coaching scheme,' Gourlay says.

'Importantly, we know this match will be against the quality of opposition Carlo Ancelotti requires and in a suitable venue, with a great atmosphere too. We are delighted our fans in Thailand will have a chance to see us play in the flesh.

Gamble. He has the potential to be a very good player, although he doesn't seem to know where he fits in yet. He is not steady enough for a CH, where you guys saw his future. Time will tell.

The majority of Wolves fans rated him as a punt around 3 Million, however Mick only has that left in the pot and we are short in other positions, so thanks for the loan !!

I wouldn't leave him on the pitch when Whelan is around either! Did you see that extraordinarily lame bit if defending when Whelan moved the ball to his right to shoot and hit the underside of the bar in the Stoke match last night. Most average EPL centre backs would have got some kind of block in - Terry just let him shoot. Either he was already carrying an injury (in which case he should have come off) or his star is on the wane. I suspect Ancelotti's kind words were a warm up for the final hurrah this season for JT.

Chelsea 2 - 0 Stoke

Chelsea maintained their 100 per cent start to the Premier League season with a 2-0 victory over Stoke at Stamford Bridge.

Having scored six goals in each of their opening two games, Chelsea were made to work much harder for their three points before a fine finish from Florent Malouda and a Didier Drogba penalty condemned the Potters to a third successive defeat.

The Blues seemed determined to put on another show for their supporters early on and dominated from the outset.

Frank Lampard squandered a chance to break the deadlock from the penalty spot after Malouda had been brought down by Ryan Shawcross,with Thomas Sorensen saving his tame effort.

But the Blues were not to be denied for long and Malouda slotted past Sorensen on 32 minutes after being released through the centre by a clever John Terry pass.

Stoke looked stronger after the interval and nearly equalised when Glenn Whelan'sthunderous long-range effort struck the crossbar, but the game was put to bed in the 77th minute after Chelsea won a second spot-kick.

Drogba showed Lampard how it should be done with a powerful strike to keep the Blues top of the Premier League table.

Chelsea's starting line-up showed just one change with Paulo Ferreira coming in for full-back Branislav Ivanovic, who was suffering from a back injury.

For Stoke, goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, linked with Chelsea and reported to have refused to play against Shrewsbury in the Carling Cup in midweek, was on the bench.

But while it was not the goal rout of recent weeks, Chelsea were by far the classier side, giving warning of what was to come within five minutes when Michael Essien split the Stoke defence with a pass into the path of Ashley Cole to set up a chance the England full-back pulled wide.

Stoke also had their chances early on, Dean Whitehead bringing a sharp save from Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech with a snap shot following a neat one-two with Kenwyne Jones and Jon Walters lifting a lob on to the top of the Chelsea net.

It would have made it even easier for Chelsea, of course, if Lampard had not missed that penalty on 10 minutes after Shawcross brought down Malouda.

It was a poor spot-kick, side-footed to Sorensen's left-hand side and the Stoke goalkeeper had no problem falling on the ball.

Sorensen also punched away a savagely-struck free-kick from Drogba in a first half which could easily have turned into another goal landslide.

Much of that was to do with Essien and Lampard who ran the midfield with precision passing and fluent movement. It was no surprise when the breakthrough came in the 32nd minute.

This time captain Terry provided the killer pass, threading a ball through for Malouda to run on to and smash a right-foot shot past Sorensen for his fourth goal of the season.

When this Chelsea side get ahead they are difficult to catch. Carlo Ancelotti does not apply the brakes like Jose Mourinho, who was content to shut up shop from a winning position.

They surge forward looking for more goals, none more so than Cole who met a ball floated into the box acrobatically on the volley only to see his shot rattle the Stoke bar and rebound to safety.

Sorensen was required again in the second-half, most notably to save a point-blank header from Drogba following a floated cross from Anelka.

To Stoke's credit they did not capitulate. They dug in with substitute Whelan giving them more bite and direction.

Indeed, he provided the shot of the second half, giving Chelsea something of a fright when he stepped forward and cracked a 25-yard shot against Cech's crossbar only to see the ball bounce down and away to safety.

But the game was sealed for Chelsea when Sorensen was bedazzled by Anelka's pace and Drogba slotted home from the penalty spot.

There was just time for Daniel Sturridge, on his 21st birthday, to come on for Anelka and Brazilian midfielder Ramires to make his debut from the bench.

So Chelsea march on. 14 league goals scored. None conceded. They look unstoppable.

BTW We have'nt heard from the funny guy that used to come on this thread signing off on each post with "careless" or something like that. i think he was their other supporter.
