Liverpool 2 - 0 Chelsea :(

Liverpool continued their recent resurgence as Fernando Torres scored both goals in a 2-0 victory over leaders Chelsea at Anfield.

The Blues had conceded just three times in their opening 10 Premier League matches but were powerless against the class of Torres as Roy Hodgson's side rocketed into the top half of the table.

The breakthrough came after just 11 minutes as Dirk Kuyt picked out Torres with a diagonal pass and the Spaniard controlled perfectly before slotting past Petr Cech.

Torres then doubled Liverpool's advantage on the stroke of half-time with a magnificent curled finish from the left-hand side of the area into the far corner.

Chelsea laid siege to the Reds goal after the interval but were unable to reduce their arrears as Florent Malouda was denied by an instinctive Pepe Reina save from point-blank range and Nicolas Anelka hit the crossbar.

Cech also pulled off a fine stop to keep out Kuyt but for the most part it was Chelsea domination and a spirited rearguard effort from the hosts to hold on for three crucial points.

It was always likely the result would come down to who took their chances and with Didier Drogba left on the bench until the second half, Torres was given a head start.

He did not need a second invitation and in addition to his two expertly-taken first-half goals he was a constant threat to the Chelsea defence.

Torres has been short of form this season but he has always been able to produce a performance against Chelsea at Anfield over the years and this was no different.

It took just 11 minutes for him to reopen old wounds with a classic piece of finishing courtesy of a cross from Kuyt, making a welcome return after a month's absence with an ankle injury, on the left.

The Dutchman chipped a pass over the head of John Terry and Torres took one touch before firing past Cech.

Having looked short of confidence this season the 26-year-old appeared to spring to life, immediately going on a short run and firing wide.

Possession was fairly even but Liverpool created the best chances, having a penalty shout dismissed when Terry's clearance bounced up on to Yuri Zhirkov's arm from which Raul Meireles shot at Cech.

Torres did not give the goalkeeper any such chance with his second just before half-time with a strike even better than his opener and reminiscent of his first ever goal for the club - also against Chelsea.

Meireles dispossessed Ashley Cole in the centre of the pitch and rolled the ball out to the Spaniard on the left of the penalty area.

Cutting inside he curled a shot around Branislav Ivanovic and inside Terry and the far post.

It was a fitting end to undoubtedly Liverpool's best first half of the season, which was as much down to excellent organisation at the back as Torres' potency up front.

With Jamie Carragher, restored to centre-back, barking the orders the hosts limited Chelsea to one shot on target - and that a weak Salomon Kalou header straight at Reina.

Drogba's arrival for the start of the second half was inevitable but the Ivory Coast international's first shooting opportunity saw him curl a 30-yard free-kick well wide.

Ramires headed over and Zhirkov's shot was turned around the post by Reina, who also produced a brilliant close-range stop to deny Malouda.

Having got themselves into a winning position it was now a question of holding on to it for Liverpool as Chelsea ramped up the pressure.

Torres may be paid to score goals but the sight of him hoofing the ball into the upper tier of the Centenary Stand was testament to the determination of everyone to hang on at all costs.

Kuyt almost wrapped things up 15 minutes from time only for Cech's outstretched leg to divert the ball wide.

Chelsea knew it was not to be their day when Anelka's shot squeezed under Reina, whose slight touch deflected the ball up on to the bar and then Carragher cleared from the lurking Drogba two yards out.

The win moved Liverpool into ninth, the first time they have been in the top half since the opening weekend of the season, after three successive Premier League victories.

They are still not in a position to challenge Chelsea at the top of the table - where they still have a two-point lead over Manchester United - but they proved, on their day and with Torres on form, they remain a match for any side.

It seems a corner has now been turned in Hodgson's reign, and with matches to come against Wigan, Stoke and West Ham there is a real chance for them to restore some of the damage done by their poor start to the season.

Not really pulling our weight, just hope we didn't hit our best form too early!

Chelsea 1 - 0 Fulham

Michael Essien scored and was then sent off as Chelsea stayed top of the league courtesy of a win over west London rivals Fulham at Stamford Bridge.

Essien powerfully headed home the only goal from a Salomon Kalou left-wing cross during the first half.

The home side dominated after this and but for wasteful finishing would have claimed victory with ease.

They were forced to repel late pressure and finished with 10 men after Essien's two-footed tackle on Clint Dempsey.

It was a deserved straight dismissal, but a sour ending to a game in which the Ghanaian midfielder had earlier demonstrated the qualities Chelsea so badly missed during their 2-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

It also took the shine off a narrow but deserved win that ensures the Blues remain top of the Premier League.

Having not won at Chelsea in the top flight since 1964 and winless away from home in the league in 15 months, the worst thing that could have happened to Fulham's hopes here was Fernando Torres' unanswered brace against the Blues on Sunday.

Already sporting the daunting record of 15 wins in their last 16 home games, the champions have also never lost back-to-back Premier League matches under boss Carlo Ancelotti and this record rarely looked under threat.

The Blues weren't brilliant, but they didn't have to be to best their limited local rivals, who are now two points above the relegation places.

A casual Chelsea and frugal Fulham made for a cagey first 25 minutes with matching 30-yard drives at either end from the visitors young full-back Matthew Briggs and home midfielder Jon Mikel Obi the only goal-bound efforts, both of which were comfortably saved.

However, in that time, Essien had already demonstrated his industrious influence and he further underlined his importance to the Chelsea cause by giving them the lead on the half hour.

Kalou collected the ball on the left and delivered an inswinging cross that was headed home powerfully by the unmarked Ghanaian.

The goal woke Chelsea up and but for some serial wastefulness from Kalou would have carried a bigger advantage into the break.

In a two minute spell the Ivorian missed two superb chances: the first of which he fluffed after being picked out in the box by Florent Malouda and the second he flashed inches past the far post after initially holding off Briggs as he charged into the box.

Then, in the final minute of the half, Kalou was prevented from applying a telling touch to Malouda's low cross to the back post by a strong challenge from Briggs.

Kalou had the first effort of the second half when he danced past two challenges into the box, but this time the forward lacked luck as opposed to composure when Schwarzer's foot slowed his goalbound shot before Aaron Hughes hammered clear.

Minutes later Hughes was on hand again to block a powerful drive by Didier Drogba - who was selected despite being diagnosed with malaria this week, but was clearly off the pace.

The waves of home attacks continued, but somehow Fulham kept their heads narrowly above water.

From a corner, Schwarzer saved superbly point blank from Malouda before then palming away Jon Mikel Obi's 30-yard drive. The keeper would have been powerless to deny Essien from close range after he was found by Branislav Ivanovic's cross in the third phase of the same attack, but the Ghanaian somehow poked wide.

Fulham almost made the Blues pay late on as both Dempsey and substitute Zoltan Gera drew good saves from Petr Cech with well-struck long-range shots.

With only seconds to spare, Essien made his second big impression of the evening. Unfortunately, it was on Dempsey's ankle as he lunged unnecessarily with both feet into a 50/50 tackle, prompting Martin Atkinson's penultimate decision to be to show him a straight red seconds prior to blowing for full time.

Would love to know the reason why old Butch has gone, all the best to a really nice guy!

Chelsea part company with assistant manager Ray Wilkins

Chelsea have announced they are not renewing the contract of assistant manager Ray Wilkins and that he is to leave the club with immediate effect.

Wilkins, 54, joined Chelsea's coaching staff for a second time in 2008 to work under Luiz Felipe Scolari.

He stayed when Guus Hiddink came in and remained when Carlo Ancelotti was named manager ahead of the 2009-2010 season.

Chelsea's chief executive Ron Gourlay said: "I would like to thank Ray for everything he has done for Chelsea."

He added: "We all wish him well for the future."

No reason has been given for the decision not to renew the contract of Wilkins.

The former England midfielder enjoyed a distinguished playing career with the likes of Manchester United, AC Milan, QPR and Rangers after making his Chelsea debut as a 17-year-old in 1973.

He managed QPR and Fulham in the mid-1990s before two spells as Chelsea's assistant coach, helping Gianluca Vialli in 1999 and 2000 before rejoining in September 2008.

Wilkins was on the bench for the club's 1-0 win over Fulham on Wednesday.

Chelsea are the reigning Premier League champions, and top this season's table with just under a third of the fixtures gone.

Wilkins is a fluent Italian speaker and has been credited with maintaining strong links between the players and the coaching staff at Stamford Bridge.

In Ancelotti's autobiography, which was published two months ago, the Chelsea manager said Wilkins was a key part of the London club's recent success.

"Ray is one of those select few, always present, noble in spirit, a real blue-blood, Chelsea flows in his veins. His heart beats in two languages, and that helped me," he wrote.

"Without him, we couldn't have won a thing, and in particular we would not have started the year at supersonic speed."

Chelsea won the FA Cup in 2009 with Wilkins as assistant coach and claimed the Premier League and FA Cup double last season.

I reckon Butch has gone to be a Lesbian with Lampard's Ex Missus, keeping it in the Family is the way forward at Chels..

Shame really as i always had a chuckle looking at his gormless boat race on the touchline.:)

BTW, what with Ancelotti and the black shirt and ties?

After the match, Didier Drogba was quoted as saying 'It isnt quite the same without Big Ray, it is hard to play at your best when you have tears in your eyes.'

Obviously the parting was very sudden and it will take time for the team to get through the grieving process and reestablish their composure. I still think that Chelsea have the talent to eventually bounce back and retain a position that will guarantee them Champions league football next season.

Strange scoreline reaching me by wireless......maybe certainly Seapok will be along shortly with the full story.

I have noticed that the Troops in LOS really don't get the quick updates when the strange scorelines happen, as opposed to when they don't for some reason..

Must be infuriating for them..

After watching both games on TV last night and based on the performances of both title contenders the title could end up in North London come May !!

If we buy a couple of strikers and a central defender.....and are lucky with injuries you could well be right. :D

You've got more chance of a London Accent at Stamford Bridge for the next Home Game than that happening..

Blues endure week to forget

At the end of seven days in which cracks had started to emerge, Chelsea suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Sunderland in the Premier League to add to the problems at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues would have been desperate for positive headlines at the end of a week which contained a defeat at Liverpool, a scrappy and narrow win over neighbours Fulham

and the unsavoury departure of former assistant manager Ray Wilkins.

But Nedum Onuoha gave Sunderland the lead in the late stages of the first half when his brilliant, quick feet exposed abject organisation at the heart of a Chelsea defence

which was missing the injured John Terry and Alex.

And things were to get worse for Carlo Ancelotti's defending champions in the 52nd minute when Asamoah Gyan completed an excellent move that had again

embarrassed a makeshift central rearguard of Paulo Ferreira and Branislav Ivanovic.

Chelsea fans were already heading for the exits as the final whistle approached and so missed the worst moment of their team's performance in the 87th minute when

a hopeless Ashley Cole back-pass gifted Danny Welbeck a simple tap-in.

The goals were the first Chelsea had conceded at Stamford Bridge in the league this season and they had no reply as, coupled with Arsenal'svictory over Everton earlier on Sunday,

their lead at the top of the table was cut to two points.

Sunderland, who arrived in London having only won one of their last 24 Premier League away matches, were superb and fully deserved a win which moved Steve Bruce's team into the top six.

Chelsea went into the game hoping to stretch their lead at the top of the table to five points but they suffered a first home defeat since March and their first at the hands of Sunderland since 2001.

The Wearsiders made a solid start and warned Chelsea inside the opening few minutes.

Midfielder Lee Cattermole cleverly intercepted an intended pass from Ivanovic and played the ball out to Gyan on the left.

The Sunderland record signing, who scored the equaliser in their 1-1 draw against Tottenham in midweek, sent his shot just wide of the far post.

Chelsea, who beat Sunderland 7-2 last season, were struggling to make headway against Bruce's side.

Chelsea's new defensive partnership of Ferriera and Ivanovic, forced upon them by injuries to captain Terry and Alex, struggled to cope with the movement of Sunderland's changed 4-4-2 line-up.

In the 18th minute Chelsea managed to fashion their first real chance when John Obi Mikel put Nicolas Anelka in the clear, but he could not control it in time and the opportunity went begging.

Moments later Florent Malouda created an opening for Yury Zhirkov but the Russia international ended his twisting run into the area with a shot that flashed past the far post.

Chelsea midfielder Ramires sent an 18-yard header towards the top corner in the 24th minute, but Craig Gordon was able to make the save.

Sunderland defender Michael Turner was booked by referee Chris Foy after he brought down Didier Drogba, who continued to struggle in the wake of being diagnosed with malaria, on the edge of the penalty area in the 28th minute.

The Ivory Coast striker sent a rising free-kick just over the top of the crossbar, but Chelsea earned a corner as his effort took a deflection.

His next effort, from 35 yards after Cattermole has brought him down, went straight into the hands of Gordon.

But Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech kept the scores level in the 36th minute when Onuoha crossed for Welbeck to head the ball towards the bottom corner.

The Czech shot-stopper dived low to his left to turn the ball around the post.

Sunderland were unlucky not to score from the resulting corner when Kieran Richardson sent a shot across the face of the goal.

Cech was the saviour again in the 38th minute when Gyan put Welbeck through, but Cech saved with his feet.

Moments later Welbeck was brought down by Ivanovic when he got ahead of the defence and the Chelsea defender was lucky to get just a yellow card.

But after Cech made another superb double save, Onuoha dribbled through the Chelsea defence to put Sunderland in front. It was the first goal Chelsea had conceded at Stamford Bridge since they hosted Aston Villa in March.

Chelsea's afternoon got worse in the 52nd minute when Sunderland opened up their defence once more and Gyan added the second.

Jordan Henderson collected the ball from Welbeck and put Gyan clear, and the Sunderland striker made no mistake as he slipped the ball beyond Cech.

Chelsea were now rocking and unable to cope with Sunderland's quick passing and movement.

In the 59th minute Welbeck sent a curling effort just wide of the far post as the visitors threatened to add to their lead.

Chelsea had been restricted to a couple of long shots from Drogba and the boos rang out from the home fans when Malouda was replaced by Salomon Kalou.

The home side had rarely threatened in the second half and Bolo Zenden almost made it three for the visitors when he tried to divert the ball past Cech from close range in the 63rd minute.

Chelsea huffed and puffed in a bid to get themselves back into the game, but Anelka was just over with an 18-yard shot in the 86th minute.

And Sunderland made it three in the 87th minute when Chelsea defender Cole's poor back-pass was intercepted by Welbeck and the striker kept his cool to beat Cech.

Blues name new assistant

Chelsea have appointed Michael Emenalo as their new assistant first-team coach following the departure of Ray Wilkins.

Wilkins made a shock exit from Stamford Bridge last week when the Blues opted not to renew his contract.

Wilkins was a hugely respected figure among the playing staff and little explanation was given for the decision.

But Chelsea have now filled the void by promoting Emenalo from his previous role of head opposition scout.

The Nigerian was brought to the club by former boss Avram Grant in October 2007 and has worked closely with Carlo Ancelotti since he took charge last year.

An official statement read: "Chelsea Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Emenalo to the position of Assistant First-Team Coach. He moves up from his previous position of Head Opposition Scout.

"Michael has been an important part of the first-team management structure since his arrival in October 2007, and his promotion to Assistant First-Team Coach is recognition of his efforts to date.

"Michael will continue to oversee the first-team scouting operation as he makes the transition to coaching.

"He will split the initial period between assisting First-Team Coach Carlo Ancelotti and updating his coaching qualifications as he takes on this bigger and more influential role."

Ancelotti is also pleased with the appointment, adding: "Michael Emenalo is doing a fantastic job as head opposition scout and he is already working very close to me."

Emenalo, 42, was a defender during his playing days and became known to Grant during their time at Maccabi Tel Aviv.

He moved to the United States in 1986 where he graduated from Boston University three years later with a degree in international relations with political sciences, having also played college soccer.

He also played in Belgium and Germany before winning the Anglo-Italian Cup with Notts County.

He won 14 caps for Nigeria in total and played in the 1994 World Cup in the United States.

Chelsea need Alex and Terry back more than they need Wilkins. I thought Terry was past it but in the last few matches he had reminded me how important he is to Chelsea now he has presumably moved on from the affair affair.

Wilko must have had a nice pay-off to keep schtumm - we would normally have had the dirt by now. Benfits of deep Russian pockets again!

Every team suffers when their central midfield is missing - look at Man U without Ferdinand and Vidic* and think how good Arsenal would be if they had Vermaelen back with one other good central midfielder (Squillachi, Djourou and Koscielny don't qualify). Those are the positions that all world-beating teams are built around.

If Chelsea have a wobble and their price drops to 8/1 - you could have got that on Arsenal at the start of last week - I might have a punt. It's always a good idea to have a hedge against your own team (Arsenal in my case). I never bet on my own team - sort of doubles the pain.

Liked the bull in the mouth reposte Rixalex

*Yes I know the presence of these 2 did not stop an abject 75 minutes last Saturday.

Yeah thats right Singher we lost again......not going through a good time at the moment, just hope we can get some big names back in the squad before we lose too many games.

Need to start scoring goals is something we need to start doing again and fast......having four 20 year olds and an 18 year old on the bench isn't really good enough, time to get the cheque book out again I think!

At least you got the best striker in the League playing like the best striker in the League again (though Elmander is pushing for that title too).
