Have searched the forum but there does not seem to any info on what may seem a strange question to some.

Purchased a 2004 Nissan Frontier recently all going well and covered by 1st class insurance. No Probs.

Still have my 1992 Toyota Corolla rego not due until March 2007 - went into the transport office 20kms nth of Khon Kaen and asked about obtaining 3rd class insurance - I was told I will have to wait until I pay the new Rego next March and then it can all be done at once.

Am I correct in thinking the lovely young lass was confusing my request for 3rd class ins with the normal road tax/ins or is this the norm??

In other words she is saying you can only take out insurance on the car when you renew the yearly rego.(which of course contains two parts a road tax & a insur of some type)- This is not what I consider 1st, 2nd or 3rd class insurance - the 1,2,3 insur covers the car or the other car or both depending upon the level taken if I am right in my thinking.

Can someone clarify the situation of insurance in Thailand please.

The Thai mandatory insurance corresponds with the date on the registration, so yes, I think she was confused. The third class insurance is independent of the registration. I strongly advise every farang car owner to have this coverage. It is NOT expensive and for about 4,000 baht per year you can be comfortable knowing that you have your insurance agent between you and the police. I was very surprised that I wasn't able to find 2nd class insurance. That covers liability, theft and fire. the 3rd class is liability only. I ended up with 1st class insurance on both my vehicles, mainly to get the theft coverage. The 1st class full coverage is quite expensive when compared to 3rd class. I pay about 16,000 baht per year per vehicle. The premiums for my insurance come due about a month before the registration. That's because it took about a month to get the registration and new plates and I had the insurance from day one.

Last year I had only 3rd class insurance on my Nissan because I wouldn't allow my wife to drive it. Now that she has her driver's license I have gone to 1st class insurance. :o

What company do you use for your 1st class insurance?

And are you please with their service , if you have had to use it?

I am surprised in the jump in price from 2nd class to 1st class , is that your experience also ?

liberty insurance seems to be pretty ok. they belong to liberty mutual.

they're a rather new face in the market, but well established by now with a reasonable service-culture. saw stickers of them in police stations, meaning: they know their game.

I have both of my vehicles insured with Liberty Mutual Group. (LMG). I have not had to test the policy so I really don't know about the service. Prior to this I had them insured through a Bangkok company. That company had no agents in this area so I changed to LMG, mainly because they have agents all over the country. Since my wife is now driving my Nissan, I changed from 3rd class to 1st class. :o
