Query for long-term residents: how stable is the power situation these days? I'm aware of the regular blackouts in the past, having been on and off the island over the last 11 years, mainly around the Lamai area. I am now spending a 4 months a year in Thailand and was considering a base in Samui but want stable power and internet access, which hasn't been evident in the past. Any comments v. helpful, thanks.

I can't speak for all areas of Samui, but generally the power is pretty stable... and has been since the new line came in from Khanom. 2010 if I remember.

They have been upgrading main lines in some areas (Nathon hill being one, recently) which caused power to be down while they reset the lines... understandable.

If power does go down, for other reasons, it is generally never more than about half to one hour. Really not a lot of complaint about power these days...at least from me!

Both Internet and power supply are fairly stable – simply perfect, compared to 10-years ago – but you will need an UPS for a PC (and other sensitive mains-powered electronics), as we continuously have short power drops (few seconds) and in some areas sometime low voltage or deviation in voltage, if local transformers and cables have not been upgraded. Only very few Internet black-outs and normally dealt with, within short time and up to an hour or two (seem to mainly be router problems at the mainland).

Frequent dropping out of the Internet causes me to toggle between two services. Probably 10 owner outages the last two months, maybe because of the digging for the big water project. Hot water heater only has enough juice to function about half the time, during non peak usage hours. This is on West side.
