Workers have started to build a road along the fine Huay Yang beach, which is 20 kms south of Prachuab Khirikhan. They have planted poles to indicate the width of the road, and it looks as though the construction work will result in the removal of the illegal food stalls on the beach. The women working in them were shouting angrily at the construction workers and the village headman yesterday. Unfortunately, some handsome trees are scheduled to be chopped down in order to allow the road to have a uniform width.

Is that the stretch of beach where the nice little cocktail / pizza bar is? I enjoyed many visits to this place and enjoyed a beer and lasagna under those great old casurina trees. Sad if they are removed....and the bar.

That's the place exactly. They are going to build a concrete road along the beach, and the food stands will be removed, but probably only temporarily. The people will no doubt be back in a flash once the work is finished, which cannot be said of the trees, of course. Hopefully, they won't cut down too many..

As AliasJohn knows, this long beach is very popular with Thai families and so it seems either mean or thoughtless to start construction work just before a major holiday. This morning, very big earth-moving machines were brought in and so, with no food stalls and no easy access to parking places by the beach, the holiday will be disrupted for some people. This weekend was also a rare chance in the low season for businesses close to the beach to make some money.

I hope the vendors go back as that little stretch of beach was very special. Many times my wife and myself have enjoyed the clean beach and the great food provided by the vendors in particular Pom and his wife who have the beach bar. I have taken many friends who visit us there and they can't believe that we can be only 20 kms from Prachuap and have the whole beach to ourselves. As you say Ombra, very thoughtless to start just before a very important holiday break.

They never learn do they? How many times does it have to be said, explained etc., do not build a road so close to a beach. It obstructs access, it destroys the natural ecosystem by interfering with natural drainage, it facilitates traffic congestion, and on and on it goes. One need only look at the poor planning associated with the beach road in Patong to understand.

Why is it so hard for Thai urban planners to apply the concept of a buffer zone? Even the Chinese do that now. Oh wait. There is no such thing as urban planning in Thailand.

That's a good point. The dirt road was perfectly adequate for the small amount of traffic along the beach. A wide concrete road will not only look ugly but will encourage motorcyclists to ride faster in an area where children are playing. The priorities of the 'planners' are hard to understand given the fact that one busy stretch of road in Huay Yang is badly potholed and hasn't been repaired for years.
