CHIANG MAI: -- Police in Chiang Mai raided a hotel behind the Night Bazaar and found that it was operating without a license.

Acting on a tip off tourist police and immigration official raided the De Chen Guesthouse in Kamphaeng Din Road on Tuesday, reported Thairath.

Manager Cherng Long, 30, was caught red handed helping guests from a Chinese tour group and asked for the license which he was unable to furnish.

He was handed over to Chiang Mai police along with a computer used to record accounts and guest details.

The enquiry will look into the investors behind the operation.

A manager with a non-Thai name? Does he has a work permit too?

The place looks like it has been there for some time. A "tip-off" from someone who wants to add a new hotel to their chain.

Like those 29 speedboats and 53 buses acquired earlier from the Chinese Tranlee Travel Co in Phuket which would surely now be in the hands of a new Thai owner. Someone is in line to acquire this hotel at a bargain basement price; after some paper shuffling.

Congratulations BIB you have brought another dangerous criminal to justice. Sorry no silver tray on this one.

How did I know it would involve the Chinese.

Only Thais are allowed to make money and profit in Thailand.

Lets get back to what this is about,

You cannot run a Hotel or Bar without the appropriate licences.

Tourist police and immigration are not the ones who usually check for hotel licenses.

why not have a random check on regular basis on

all the establishments to ensure legal conformity.

of course an enforcement team will be needed but the results

produced would far outweigh the investment in human resources.

the chances of detecting undesirable and sub standard practices

will also be greater.

Any license should also be on display.

Of course they check every month... Now immigration in the act as well... You gotta have the brown bag ready though

Yes, exactly the offender regardless of any related graft and corruption did not have his house in order.

WHY ? I suspect it was to maximise profit and avoid taxes and associated expenses.

Bury the bastards.

It's not easy to get a hotel license. You need correct fire precautions such as a set of emergency stairs.

If the building was not correctly configured it would not be licensed.

So easier to forget about it and crack on.

Read the article, why are tourist police and immigration police checking hotel licences ??, because the establishment is being run by a non-Thai.

There are hundreds of bars and hotels and nightclubs that dont have the proper licences (remember Santika ??).

But for some strange reason they continue to operate.

To say, with no proof whatsoever, that there are hundreds of bars that don't have the proper licences, is ridiculous speculation on your behalf.

I read the article Seismic & understand it. It does not make it right does it ?.

I repeat no licence , no can operate.

As for the non Thai operative,, if that is so ,,, in itself is illegal, must be 51% Thai owned

There you go. Most of these business licences are in little envelopes and the Thais are making the money.

They don't come in little envelopes, you obtain them by going through the correct procedures.

clearly because a foreigner is involved (Chinese). read the name...

100's of illegal hotels? no, i don't think so......

I suspect as has already been mentioned, an envious person or opposition to this guesthouse has seen a opportunity to exploit. Agreed that no matter who you are you should have 'your ducks in a row'.

You're a bit stupid if you don't. ..particularly in this country. Cause if you don't have your act sorted out there are plenty of people waiting in the wings ready to knife you in the back.

Live and learn huh?

You would think the licensing authorities could easily check their database to determine if an address has a license to operate a hotel.

You would also think that such licensing authority would have an enforcement person drive around Chiang Ma checking if new hotels have licenses.

I should imagine that if the manager is 2nd or 3rd generation Chinese/Taiwanese/Singaporean, he may well be a Thai citizen.
