When Thainess means gotta ban'em all

BANGKOK: -- Whenever disruptive innovation reaches the shores of Thailand, time and again the knee-jerk reaction is to make a huge fuss, ban it as yet another Western evil, launch an “improved” and “appropriate” Thai alternative that nobody ends up using, and finally forget about it when people move on to the next crisis du jour.

Remember the uproar over Uber motorcycles? Or Uber cars for that matter? Thailand banned them, launched something Thai that was “better” and then left it to rot in peace.

They can ban some of the boring stuff but banning Pokemon completely might bring the uni students onto the streets.  They should try banning Facebook or Line and see what happens, revolution no doubt.

Thailand is known for starting projects and a big bang only to quickie end up in the

' too hard ' basket, follow-through on projects and good ideas are virtually non existent

in this country, they have the attention's life span is of a few months old baby when he sees

new toy...... however, they're very big on rules, they have millions of them, some dating

back to the stone age, very few however, are enforced properly.....

Thailand seems to take everything western and tries to Thai it up, no matter what the final outcome.

Don't really see that in the west, where they just seem enjoy whatever makes life more fun and don't really care where it originated.

Shrewd insight. It's an IQ/education thing.

Ooh, the soaps are on the telly, gotta go... might see someone dressed up to look like a stupid zombie *sigh*.

For most Thais there is nothing outside of Thailand. Just a void. There be dragons.

The game play part is by US company - but they license the cartoon Pokemon from Nintendo and the Japanese creator.

the developer of Pokemon Go! is American but, yes, they license from Nintendo but this game, the one we are talking about, is from the US

Hmmm. Ronald Reagan, Goerge W Bush, Barak Obama and Donald Trump are/were from the US too as I recall.

Not very encouraging. It seems the US does brain-dead pretty well so Pokemon Go should be a roaring success, and (naturally) Thais will be one of their biggest and most enthusiastic markets..

Actually the original game play idea was from Japan, developed by Nintendo CEO Satoru (passed away last year). He was a fan of another game called Ingress developed by Niantic which is the first and original game using real life augmented reality, collecting stuff. It was an April Fool's joke back in 2014 when they collaborated with Google on the joke for Pokemon Go. They turn it into a game because they saw the amount of attention it garnered. So all in all, I would say Nintendo played a bigger part in the development of the game still, as they were the original creators of Pokemon game play and they were the ones who thought about the Pokemon Go idea. They collaborated with Niantic to use their augmented reality to bring the game to life. But the game is released by Niantic, so consider as "from" the US.

In addition nintendo shares took a hit when it was revealed they will not receive the bulk of the profits from pokemon go...they go to it's american creators.

Yup they don't get much since they only own 30% of Pokemon Company. Given how big the company is and decline in game / console sales, the Pokemon Go won't make too much of a different on their profits.

Looks like Apple gets 30% of the sales from the app store purchases directly, rest goes to Google, then trickles down to Niantic.

Anything new invented since Sakdina is evil, off back to your bamboo huts with the peasants.

The problem is if the peasants come into contact with to much modern stuff they will not be satisfied with bamboo huts.

The elites will be called on to share the wealth, a terrible thought.

They can be dusted off fast and used. The Bridge club fiasco is a good example.
