PHUKET: -- Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha today vowed to seriously crackdown on all airport mafias no matter who they are.

In the opening of the international terminal building at Phuket airport this morning, he said mafias operating in all airports must not be allowed to exist.

He said this particular influential people problem must be resolved at all airports, notably taxi mafias.

They would crackdown seriously no matter who they are, he said.

He also stressed airport security as significant if Phuket is to boost tourism, beside sufficient facilities to serve increasing tourists to the province.

After opening the terminal building, the prime minister also visited Prince of Songkhka University Phuket Campus and open a fair on Patong beach

He is spouting off about taxis in Phuket, i find that hilarious.

He cannot /will not fix the taxi problems in Bangkok.

He has no chance of fixing it in Phuket.

I'm sure all the taxi boys were on their finest behaviours with even a few wais sprinkled in for good measure.

Would be great if the PM had to suffer through the same "taxi taxi" baying that all tourists have to listen to as well as the heavy traffic to reach Patong.  If this happened, then perhaps something might be done..............

Why didn't he tell the truth, " sorry folks I don't do taxis only bike lanes. "

It was so successful last time his troops were sent in to address the issue, the main offenders just stared the army down.

Why does he think that he will get a different result this time?

To be fair, a lot of the rats did scurry for about a month before resuming "their turf". Sure was nice to find good parking for that one month!

Is it possible he will succeed as no one from his staff will go and report a failure to oust the mafia?

its a shame really, all of these problems we have put up with for years and years and finally here is someone saying they are going to do something about it. A PM infact that actually cares. never would or did happen in the last 12 years which is why tourism is down and most people never return to thailand after they are scammed one too many times.
Lets hope he does what he says...

Personally i find Pattaya much better now the beaches have been cleaned up, another one of his initiatives that worked. Also not seen so many jet ski mafia around. Is he actually doing something?

Having said that as soon as the new PM comes in i have been told Thailand we go right back to its old corrupt self...

Again it was the PM going on about tourism as if there was nothing else that was keeping the economy alive. In all truth tourism is probably the only thing right now that is keeping the economy from being on total life support and that might be the reason why there is usually some panic in his demeanor when he rabbits on about tourism and tourists. But like everything else they only words and not action.

17% of GDP according to one minister's speech yesterday. Without tourism the country would be in deep .......................(insert your own word).

As most people who have been/ lived on Phuket know, the taxi scam thugs have been operating for years ! And all over the island! They are the main reason why tourists have bad memories of their holiday . These mostly rude, often drunk or high on drugs individuals are a danger to society . You do not get this problem in Bangkok or other Thai cities, or very rarely. The government and prime ministers have closed their eyes to this problem for over 20 years, why will the General do something about it now ?

Just stumbled upon...

Official opening and Mr. P. visit exactly 9 years after the terrible One-Two-Go disaster.

89 people killed on 16. Sep 2007.

Part of the disaster was the terrible performance/incompetence of the recovery teams/fire brigade of Phuket airport.

I don't find words for the mess at One-Two-Go (aka Orient)

Nothing will change vis a vis taxis Phuket The man is all waffles and smiles except on those occasions he gives out the evil eye to those who challenge his authority.
